Randall RM100
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:37:58 PM »
Ok I've decided it's time to buy a new head with versitility in mind I'm torn between the Marshall JVM 410 and the Randall MT 100 and I'm leaning toward the Randall at the moment. Does anyone have any experience of these beasties?

Why go for either of them really? I mean, both good amps, but in that price range there are so many options, what is it you're after?

And what do you mean by Randall MT100? Is that the 100w MTS amp? The Egnater is meant to be alot better, though not sure about the price difference.

I have a Randall RM100 (which is what I think you mean - the modular amp), and it totally kicks ass. There are other great amps in the price range, like noodle says, but I love the RM. Some modules are better than others (although it's all down to taste), but the best of them are as good as any preamp I've ever heard, and I think there is something for all tastes (even tele players ). Personally, I like the balance that the RM strikes between versatility and simplicity, without losing focus on sheer good tone.

When I was making my decision I was looking at a Randall T2, which is the best sounding rock amp I've heard, and uber-simple, and a Vetta, which we all know is the king of versatility (for better or worse), and I decided to go somewhere in the middle. I think I got the best of both worlds :D

Yes that's the model I ment the idea of mixing modules appeals imensely, the ones that cought my eye were the blackface the plexi and the tredplate.

Blackface and plexi are fantastic, but the treadplate is commonly regarded as a bit underwhelming. I have a "recto", which is exactly the same thing (to my knowledge), and it's good but not as awesome as my 1086 or Mr Scary. That said, it sounds surprisingly nice clean, which the others don't really. There are better Mesa-style modules out there, though, like the Lynch "Grail" mod. I'm planning to replace my Recto with a KH1 (which is basically a blackface that's been redesigned to handle being fed by active pickups).

i quite liked both of those (only been able to try a few of the randall modules though), but as noodle says, at those kind of prices you have a ton of options, there's no reason to narrow it down to those two (unless you've tried everything else and prefer those, of course).
