I've been playing a few of my guitars this evening, trying some stuff out, and nothing sounds or feels as good to me for gigging in my rock band as my PRS McCartys.  My maple top in particular is a belting guitar.  My Mira is great for a brighter, thinner, rock tone but I love the 'chunk' of the McCarty more.  The McCarty Korina is a more focused tone and is better for bluesier stuff.

Only my CS Tele gets a look in these days from my non-PRS stable as that just smokes for Fender tones.  My SG only gets used for 'DC gigs, as does my LP Special (backup for the SG).

I'm seriously considering chopping in some guitars and getting the ultimate production PRS - a Modern Eagle.  Based on the McCarty, they have a Brazilian Rosewood neck and top spec maple/mahogany.  I've got bad GAS for this one.....

Wew all know what happens when you start "seriously considering" things...     I was expecting the thread to be about something you've already bought!

I have to say, though, the Modern Eagle does nothing for me, sorry.  I don't like the mix & match gold/nickel hardware or that "faded blue jeans" finish.  Or the birds.  It's too blingy.   

How many arms and legs would that cost?

It's very blingy yes, I agree.  Too blingy for me if I'm honest.  I'm really curious about the tone though, is it THAT much better than anything else?  I'm planning on taking a trip to Guitars4You in the near future with a few guitars and trying a Modern Eagle out in comparison to my McCarty maple top.

That particular ME is a used 2005 model and it's up for £3899  :o

If I bought one, I'd be gigging it too.  MartinW would approve of that part at least  ;)

As I've said before, I think the fact that you actually gig "justifies" your guitar spending more than mine.  :oops:

But £3,899!!!  :o   That's crazy money, I'd never get over the guilt if I spent that much.  And I'm not even Catholic.  :lol:

I'm just mulling it over, trying to justify it to myself in a way.  If they really are THAT good, they would be worth the cost.  Heartwood East Coast maple top, South American mahogany body, Brazilian rosewood neck and a nitro finish.  Doesn't get much better than that...

1. You can't possibly justfy £3.9k for a guitar.  :(

2. You don't have to; If you want it and can afford it, get it.  :D

Treat yourself and get a good luthier to do a custom build. Everyone should at least once.

Yeah, that's true.  But people are prepared to pay through the nose for that extra 5%, or 1% or whatever it may be - that's what the luxury goods market is all about really. 

I'm the sort of person who buys things to just "do the job".  I wear clothes until they fall apart.  And I wear a 25 year old Casio watch - because it still works, so why replace it? 

I wish I could apply the same logic to guitars...

i think we may be the same there.  unfortunatly my 70's seiko has just bitten the dust.  still ticking away but i am unable to set the time anymore .  currently its 1 hour 5 minutes ahead and 11 days behind

i just wanted to point out that the modern eagle isnt  going to be £2.5k better than the PRS's twinfan has.  at most it may be 5 - 10% better... which you obviously have to pay a hell of a lot more for.

That's the problem isn't it?  Diminishing returns.  I'm fairly old-skool when it comes to tones, as I have some really nice valve amps and a few simple pedals.  The basic guitar into amp tone really comes across in my rig, so I would notice the difference more than someone who was very effects heavy (for example).  However, that difference comes at a high price  :(

With regard to custom builds, they're just not my thing.  I like to see and try before I buy.

After doing some simple calculations this morning, I'd have to lose some nice guitars to buy the Eagle, so it's probably not going to happen.  I will have to try one out though, for curiosities sake  :)
