Best LOW wattage valve amp for metal
« on: November 19, 2008, 10:38:05 AM »
?

Probably for tracking leads, but if it can serve as all round practice amp all the better.

The blackstar stuff looks best on cursory inspection. Whats the difference between that and blackheart?

And by low, I mean, like 5W

And by metal I mean $%&#ing METAL. Not wussy depthless crunch. If this is acheivable with an OD, I will also consider that.

I'd say a POD or get a pedal like the Metal Muff or something?

5w Mesa Triple Rectifiers aren't available......

I have a pod. I hate it. It sounds like a kick drum filled with angry bees on every setting.

Something with some balls that I can add an overdrive too would suffice.

Looked up more info on the HT. Doesnt do metal, on its own at least.

Hmpfff.

On a rethink ... perhaps you would be better off buying an iso cab. Or re-amping.

hey MDV, I thought you were going to use that Peters amp for practising, or maybe I just read too much into the blokes website about how it's designed to sound good at low volumes if you tweak all the power amp settings

I don't really know much on low watt amps for metal but for pedals, I thought the metal muff sounded good from the youtube clips I've seen, not that I've tried a real one so take that with a pinch of salt

Splawn Competition is only 25W in triode.

I fancy a go of one of these exactly for that reason. Now that there's a UK dealer...

big problem is a lot of the low wattage amps  aren't aimed at metal...

i've recently had a major GAS attack for a cornford carrera... despite not having actually tried it  . I doubt it'll do the br00talz (could be wrong though), but cornford lead tones are generally awesome (if the other cornfords i've tried are anything to go by).

depends how much you want to spend, of course- i haven't tried those blackstars yet. Big problem with those is they seem to just be their pedal with a power amp attached? could be wrong, though. :)

have you thought getting a 30 or 50w hi gainer and pulling some tubes to make it quieter?
I think there's a lot more metal amps in that wattage range.

:D :D

TO, the splawn is pushing it in power and price, but thanks, I'll look into it.

JDC - the chimera is still on the cards. In that I'm GASsing for it like a madman, but the exchange rate at the moment made them rather a bit less appealing, and, though its the thing I want most in my GAS list, its the thing I need the least. Much as I hate to have to acknowledge this fact - a 100W valve amp is no practice amp! I have a powerball, and thats sitting nearly unused since I'm not gigging and I recently moved next door to two very old folk! I'm building an Isolation cab, and the instant its finished, the Chimera will go to the top of the list. Right now its a big 100W, £1500, untested and untestable Nice-to-have (*Probably* - like I say, its untested).

Oh - you tease!

HTH is building me a 10w version of the Tim Caswell/SIR Number 39 modified Marshall that Slash used on Appetite and George Lynch used for most of the Under Lock and Key Tour

We are using an 80s Transistor Marshall as the donor amp - giving us a nice stable cabinet , Chassis and Celestion 12" speaker.

sorry ben - i haven't tried the splawn in question - but every amp i tried, triode mode sucked  :x also 25w might be a little loud. maybe splawn did some working getting triode mode to sound good. if they did, i'd love to hear about it
