Alnico help
« on: November 25, 2008, 08:22:57 PM »
I'm about to buy 2 sets of BKPs for a 335/Les Paul type and an SG type.  I want low output and have narrowed it down to Riff Raff, Stormy Monday and Mules.  I'm certain on a RR bridge for the SG - what model + alnico should I go for the neck?  What p'ups for the 335/Lespaul + Alnico?  I don't want to get the same p'up for both guitars.
BKPS: Cryogenic Apache set, Mule set, Riff Raff, Stormy Monday.

Hi mate, what music are you playing and what guitar is the 335/Les Paul?  Is it a 335 or a Les Paul?

I have AII SM's and they are sweet and tonefull.  They do not have loads of grunt though and are balanced accross the frequency range.  For more mids and grunt but still vintage I think Mules might be better.  The AII adds to the sweetness but the bass is softer for it, less cut in a band mix for low string riffing but for cleaner blues / jazz styles I think they are untouchable.

Thanks Twinfan, I love the decisiveness!  I was thinking the exact same choices but then wondered about an alnico IV SM neck with a IV Mule bridge for the 335 type.
Tom J, the guitar is a Guild Bluesbird, which is a LP shape, all mahogany with maple top but it is mostly hollow inside and gives a tone that is like a mix between 335/LP.  I suppose I play a bit of every style; blues, jazz, hard rock, metal.
BKPS: Cryogenic Apache set, Mule set, Riff Raff, Stormy Monday.

AIV SM is like a "Mule-lite".  If you want a more open and clearer neck tone, that's the way to go

I got to agree with twinfan.  Stormy Monday neck for the SG every time it just a great neck pickup.

I'd say A2 SM's in the 335, but that's because that's what I want!
