HHH pickup advice...
« on: November 27, 2008, 09:26:18 PM »
Hello all,

I'm looking for a little advice regarding a triple humbucker setup for my VOS '61 SG/Les Paul Custom... My style ranges from mostly Blues and Classic Rock to Metal and Doom... I'm thinking of doing a Nail Bomb or War Pig in the bridge with an Emerald in the Middle and either an Emerald or Black Dog in the neck position... I'm also planning on isolating the switch positions and changing out one of the tone pots for a volume pot which would yield a true bridge, middle and neck switch configuration with a master tone (the standard wiring is bridge, bridge/middle, neck with one volume/tone for bridge/middle and one volume/tone for neck)... The body is mahogany with a maple neck and ebony fretboard and block MOP inlays... Any suggestions?

Thanks!
JP

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I'm not great at picking pups, so I'm not going to say too much. I have a Nailbomb set in my LP, and if you go for a Nailbomb bridge, then consider the 'bomb neck as well, the bomb neck is really mellow and smooth (or seems it compared to the bridge), quite dark in my LP and I think it fits very well with the bridge.

Overall I really think you need to speak to Tim.

I have a les paul custom (greco) with a cold sweat in the bridge, emerald in the middle and Rebel yell in the neck,
and a telecaster with a WP in the Bridge a rebell yell in the middle and mule in the neck; they both sound great and provide an almost unending combination of original tones!

If youre looking for maximum flexibility for musical styles I'n not sure the WP would be "the best" alrounder.

I dont think you can go far wrong with the nailbomb - and there is a lot of cold sweat love at  the moment.  Emerald is a sure fire bet for the middle, but i' be tempeted to go for something sweeter in the neck maybe a Mule/Abraxas/Cold Sweat ?

Thanks for the advice all! I was concerned about the War Pig being too dark as well... I'm not totally set on a combination yet, but getting there... Thanks again!

I played it once in a brazilian mahogany 7-string ibanez
don't know how it sounds in a SG, though
but it's made for it
