Nailbombs -=wiring help & first impressions=-
« on: December 03, 2008, 04:51:40 PM »
Hi there guys ! I received my NBs yesterday and i finally felt what it's like to hold that little box in your hands with your pups waiting to get installed !  :D Mine, however, didn't have to wait for more than half a day...i installed them last night :) Well...at least TRIED to install them. After consulting various schematics and one of my cousins who knows his way around electronics i ended up having a perfectly working bridge pickup and a perfectly dead neck pickup !  :P

Even though i had installed pups before, this time things got a little complicated because i encountered a couple of first timers...a push/pull pot and a dual concentric pot.I have a killswitch installed where the neck tone pot used to be so i thought i'd use a concentric pot for both pickup volumes and in the remaining two holes i'd put the tone pots.I was also aiming to use the push/pull pot for the neck tone and also for coil splitting the neck pup.

The volume concentric pot seems to be working fine apart from the fact that even when it's turned down all the way i can still hear my guitar through the amp.I emailed Tim and he said there might be a ground connection leaking signal...but other than that i got two volume pots in one hole and i'm totally happy with it ! The bridge tone also works perfectly...the neck pickup is really giving me a hard time though. At first it was completely dead and i was sure it had something to do with the push/pull pot.So i asked for Tim's advice and he sent a couple of coil split schematics.

After correcting some obvious mistakes i had done i finally got the neck pup working. But another problem arised. The schematics Tim sent me were for a volume pot wired with split coil whereas what i wanted was a tone pot wired for coil split. So once again, the coil split is not working and neither is the tone control for the neck pup  :( :( I'd really appreciate it if you guys could help me out before i get a professional take a look in my guitar.

So even though i was really bummed out by the wiring mess i made i thought i should at least play with my bridge pup.I was blown away !!!!  :D :D Compared to the Emgs previously installed in my guitar(85-bridge,81-neck) the NBs sounded like taking the earplugs off ! They sound HUGE !!!  :o I tune my guitar down to B and the EMGs sounded muddy and really devoid of any tonal character...the NBs retain AMAZING clarity while being as punchy as it gets ! Really big, open sound, heavy but not oversaturated, thick but not muddy ! I honestly couldn't even possibly hope my guitar would sound so good mainly because i had gotten used to the sound of the EMGs through the years and i trained myself into liking it.But nothing compares to actually listening the pups react to the way you play which is something that the EMGs were totally incapable of.Anyway ! I'll post some clips as soon as i get the wiring problems sorted out...'till then...here are a couple of pics of the NBs in my Epi !  :D

P.s.I know...that Ministry sticker doesn't look that good but it's been there a long time and i got emotionally attached to it ! :P :D

I don't think that EMG 85's are bad pickups at all.

   My thoughts exactly !!! :P

Yamhammer is right though...the 85's are not that bad...it was the 81 that i never got to use !  :? I first installed it in the bridge position...it was so trebly that i thought the sound was coming from an AM radio station !  :D Then i installed it in the neck...i don't think i ever really used it,not to mention that the combination of the two EMGs was out of the question ! What i like about my Nailbombs is that they sound capable of going wherever i want them too.The actives were just too flat sounding.

Any ideas about my wiring problem ? Does anyone have a schematic of a tone pot with coil split ?

Hey Dude, glad you are liking the 'bombs. It's nice to hear someone else have that 'wow' moment, you don't always get it all at once, sometimes it takes a few sessions for you to get your ear in and realise what you've got.

I wish I could help with the wiring, but that isn't my forte I'm afraid. :(

What i like about them is that they seem to be exactly what i was looking for.I was really tired of the active sound cause it couldn't get me where i wanted to go.It was all about the output but the tone was nowhere to be found...every riff sounded exactly the same ! What i miss about them is the noise-free operation but at least now i have a reason to buy that ISP Decimator i was craving for ! :P

And mind you that i still haven't tried the neck pickup at all ! I went to a guitar shop today to get the wiring problem sorted out so hopefully i'll have my guitar back by Saturday with both pickups functional. :? What worries me is that they asked for Tim's schematics...i mean it is supposed to be their job, right ? but they need assistance to coil split a pup ? I bet it's a matter of minutes for someone who has done it before...anyway....we'll see.

It's probably just for the colour coding of the wires, there is no standard for that so without the disgram they are guessing.

No,i think the guy sounded confused when i told him about the coil split ! :) It's not about the colour coding...besides it's not that hard to figure out...black and bare are always the ground so what's left are the two coils of the pup.Anyway i just hope they fix it soon so i can record a couple of clips !  :) I'm already feeling lonely without her  :aww:

85 in bridge position isn't bad at all, i'd say... i've got an EMG equipped LTD EC100VB and after just a week of endless delusion i swapped the stock 81 with an 85, and i have to say i'm still very happy with it after almost 3 years... i like the 60 too...

of course it implies that i HATE with every atom of my body the 81... the worst sounding pickup i've ever heard - maybe except for the stock ibz-dimarzio that came with my SA prestige...
