Vigier and Bareknuckle Pups
« on: December 07, 2008, 05:22:08 PM »
Hi,

I have a vigier excalibur ultra which currently has an EMG 81/S/85 setup in there and was hoping to put in some BKPs (as i have a MM loaded LP-alike by Signature Guitars) the music i play is Iron Maiden/Megadeth/Testament/ Symphony X and Dream Theater influenced so i need the following options:

Tight Defined and Thick Rhythm Tone through distortion with enough clarity for agressive soloing (Bridge Pup)
Clear yet Fat tone for sweeps and melodic leads through Dist (Neck Pup)
Really clear clean tone (think Queensryche/Dream Theater)

Btw the 5 way switch is wired as follows

1. Neck P/up
2. Neck P/up and Middle S/C
3. Neck P/up and Bridge P/up
4. Bridge P/up and Middle S/C
5. Bridge P/up

Any Recommendations?

I think a CS or PK would make it sound excessively tight and bright, maybe thin
some people may like that (hi, TO!), but he said he wants thickness

I reckon a Nailbomb set (not ceramic) would suit your needs. It's still nice and tight, but also has those sparkly cleans you're after - you'll struggle to get these as nicely with a ceramic pickup.

JMHO though.

I've heard really good things about the Nailbomb Bridge/Cold Sweat Neck Combination, although the only player i know using that is Chris Broderick and thats in a Ibanez 7 String and i'm not sure how the p/ups would sound in an Alder/Maple setup.

a nailbomb for Christmas? sounds illegal :santa:  :snipe:

now broderick uses a cold sweat bridge/mule neck set for over a year in his main ibanez
but his guitar is mahogany

for alder/maple I'd pick the holy diver for a thick tone
it's pretty similar to the nailbomb, but... thicker!  :D

Cold Sweat (Neck) + Alder = Awesome.

He uses Cold Sweats in both positions, according to Tim he always forgets the names, and for some reason has said several times that he uses a Mule in the neck.

Tim just got back to me and recommended a Nailbomb set with a Trilogy suite s/c in the middle so my question is................. what are peoples opinions of the NB in the neck position? (i've decided to run with the bridge and middle suggestions that Tim gave)
