Suggestions for a cheap first motorbike?
« on: December 17, 2008, 11:05:07 PM »
Well a car is well out of reach for the moment, so I'm looking more towards something far more fun, a motorbike.

Looking now for something cheap on the second hand market, 125cc jobby.

If anyone has any suggestions, or knows where to look for cheaper bikes other than AutoTrader, i'd love to know about it!

Being 6ft3 and 17 stone means a moped is definitely out of the runnings, I'd just fall over :D

You're gonna find most bikes uncomfortable!

Best option is probably the Honda CBR125.  Easy to look after, bullet proof and looks pretty good.  I'd avoid things like Aprilia RS125s as they'll be uncomfortable and you have to look after them well as they're two-stroke engines.  What's the budget?

To be perfectly honest, you can get cheap cars much easier than cheap bikes................

the Honda CBR is going to be a bit too small for you, if you want a super bike style you should go for the yamaha YZF-R125.  Its a bit bigger, it is what i am planning on getting as soon as i get a permanant job.  Im 6'4.. so need something quite large too.

Aprillia's are very fragile and it'll end up costing a lot of money.  Mine also used nearly as much petrol as my mates Impreza.  If you're not after a speed machine then I'd go for a 4 stroke as they're generally a bit stronger.  Didn't find it too uncomfy and I'm 6'2" and about 15 stone.  My folks had a little Honda H100 which was a great larf.  Looked a bit old and decrepid, but I still managed a very uncontrolled wheely.

I (still) have a very cheap car for sale that is bulletproof.  Just have to put on a new carb for it to be in top working order (which shouldn't cost more than £20 or so).  One of these little beasties: http://www.bmwinfo.com/pictures/00264.jpg

bullet proof
Of course, for those times you're speeding down the motorway with bad guys firing off rounds at you, Mission Impossible style (not that it happened in MI, just.. if it did.. it would in MI.. obviously)

The budget was between 450-1,000 which would have made it 1,400 max with insurance.

Just done some mathoomatics and a car can be had for about the same total... sure the license will take longer to obtain, but there will be less death involved.

Another thought, a bike would be pretty bad on my poor back wouldn't it? hmm.

I must agree about Aprilla's, everyone i've known who has had one has mentioned the same thing, i've thus always ignored them as im a cheep-skate yorkshire man.

The Aprilias are fantastic though  :)  We've had both the 125 had the 250  :D

It sounds like a car is a better option for you....
