Gibson pots

How can you tell what rating (250, 300 or 500k) Gibson pots are? The ones in my SG seem to only have “Gibson” engraved on the back and no rating! :?

Also what length leg should I order when I get my Riff Raffs?

Your SG has 500K pots. An SG has short shaft pots, an LP long shaft. If the pots in your SG are mounted on a metal plate, like in a LP, they're also long shaft.

I never found any problems with the quality of Gibson pots.

It may have a value stamped on the pot like 300k

I can’t seem to find any indication of the value on the pot its self, I guess I’ll have to go borrow my friend’s multimeter. I had heard Gibson sometimes use 300k pots and I’d like to make sure I’ve got 500k one for when I install some Riff Raffs.

The existing pickups will almost certainly have long legs, so you'll be fine with them.  But personally I prefer short legs so there's a bit more spring tension and the pickup doesn't wobble in the mounting ring.

You'll want short leg for an sg. My sg had 300k pots as well, if you email gibson with the serial number of your sg and ask what value pots are in it they should tell you. Thats what I did.

I wouldn't trust Gibson's records to tell you what value pots are in your guitar - substitutions are not unheard of.  Get a DMM from someone (or buy a cheap one from Maplins) and measure the pots yourself.

As for short or long leg - take the pickups out your guitar and see for yourself.
