Gibson: 59 Reissue anniversary
« on: December 20, 2008, 09:17:15 PM »
http://guitarvillage.co.uk/product-detail.asp?id=7171&catid=78&manid=119&quantity=1&product=Gibson+Les+Paul+40th+Anniversary+59+Reissue+Tom+Murphy%2C+Ice+Tea%2C+New%2C+Inc.+Case+COA+

£6,999 for that!

I specifically don't understand about the 40th anniversary listing, that would make it a (new) '99. Either that or they mixed up with the 50th next year. Mostly shocked by the price though, its disgraceful. Doesn't even look like the vintage ones, or any different from a standard R9 with all its historic incorrectness

it is a joke. AAA maple top for crying out loud. I can get two Custom ESP Eclipse with 5A maple tops for that money and still have 1k left.

Indeed, it'd need to have some pretty serious re-spraying to achieve that!

It really does not look anything special.... but I had a Tom Murphy and let me say... I've NEVER played another guitar like it. I have 3 nice L.Ps... took me ages to get them as I played loads and loads. I guess that the biggest problem was that absolutely NOTHING I played, and I don't just mean Gibsons, ever came close! Remember SOME folk don't like over the top flame just as some love it! Shame I had to sell mine due to very personal circumstances, here's a pic or two....

yes some people do not like over the top flame but why charge them over the top price?
lets face it, that guitar is not worth more than 1500 quid at most.

Sorry but I would disagree.... I'm not saying it is worth nearly £7000 or whatever either, but as Gibsons chief luthier he would not put together a guitar that was not something special. My mate has a Murphy aged gold top.... so painted top, but that guitar is also superb... something about that one too, for me it's even better than any of mine... '57 R.I Custom, Jimmy Page and a Custom shop L.P DC Pro and they are far from rubbish. To all intent and purpose it looks like any gold top, but there something going on with that one too. Never had the chance to compare the Murphy Gold top to the '59 R.I I had to sell... wish I still had it!

And nobody has mentioned: thats atleast 3 x 5A(if thats what you're into) Feline with a few added extras (maybe some repro hardware etc)

I just don't know how Gibson get away with it.
Another thought, that amount of cash would cover a nice Les Paul, and a Historic make over with proper Brazilian thingy

d1dsj: You don't fancy making a thread and few pics of your JP '57 do you? ;) mini review too perchance?

i see you are not up to date with Gibson's Quality control reputation.

Excuse me sir but I am indeed up to speed with some of their issues, however you are talking about a guitar made by a world class luthier. So YOU don't like it... that's cool. I had mates who are players that didn't like the look of the one I had because it looked too "nice", but when they played and heard it they changed their mind. I will say that to get my current L.Ps... 3 of them, I must have played in excess of 150 guitars... and none of mine are shoddy although I did see some that didn't look very clever. I will also say that if you think I'm just defending/ bigging up Gibson 'coz I play them then here's the funny thing, my Yamaha SG is a better built guitar than any of the Gibsons, infact it would be hard to find a guitar built to that level for the price...ANY price, but I prefer the sound of my L.Ps.

Will do, here's a couple of pics with a couple of notes...
All 3 L.P's with my old amps, this was when I first had the '57 so it looked quite new...

here's the '57 with damage, I've just had an aged re-fin done by Rob Williams who is a top luthier. He did a great job and I'll post some pics of it now. Just for the record, look at Rob's web site (just google Rob Williams) and you will see he does GREAT work, he commented on how resonant my '57 was for an all mahogany guitar... I was going to sell it to buy one of HIS LP.s... about £4000, he said I wouldn't bother... that's a great guitar!
Anyway, this guitar is going to get Riff Raffs in the new year, but until recently had the stock '57's in. I found them to be a bit dark... not bad at all, the guitar had a really big , phat sound. The neck did lack a bit of clarity too. I've got in there at the moment an S.D Brobucker/ Jazz neck (until I get the R.R's) and it sounds pretty good. Tim repotted the S.d's for me and fitted lightly aged gold covers. We had several conversations about the Brobucker (S.D custom shop) and he admitted that he actually liked it. I haven't played any gigs since fitting them, but at lower vols in the house it sounds much clearer, pinched harmonics are now possible with the Bro.

The Page I got from a mate who works as guitar manager in a local store. The pick ups are now S.D Bro/ Seth bridge and the wiring is RSGuitarworks vintage loom. It's a great guitar and gets a beating, the pick ups are great so no BKP's for this one as I'm happy with it as it is.

i see you have never played a Navigator either. Try one some day. Then you will know what a £4k LP is supposed to sound like.
the bottom line here is that no matter who made it and no matter what it sounds like, the price is ludicrous for what is on offer.
