Mississippi Queens...
« on: January 03, 2009, 08:02:09 PM »
Thanks to the people at the musicradar.com forum for pointing me out to this forum...I'm thinking about getting a pair of MQ's for my gibson sg, but I'm a bit skeptical. I really love the sound of P-90's but rerouting my guitar would cost too much, and I've heard great things about the MQ's. Do they sound similar to the real deal? Also, does anyone have any sound clips? That would boost my confidence greatly :)

Thanks

I have a set in an epi les paul, and they are my favorite pickup set. There are a few sound clips out there, i've been planning on doing some more, hopefully before tuesday.

As far as i know, they sound like the real deal because they ARE the real deal. Same construction but in a humbucker shell.

We had a MQ neck in an LP and in an Ibanez and it was awsome (it's currently idle but there is no way we are going to sell it). It's a great pickup. Search the players forum, I'm pretty sure I've seen some good clips in there (use the search function).

Hi ( and welcome to the forum ! ) .  :)

I have set in a cheap Tanglewood 335 copy - and they are my favourite pickups. They did spend a little time in my '76 S.G. Standard, but as great as they were in the S.G. - it is not getting used as my 'Number 1' guitar.

The Missisipi Queens therefore went back into the 335 copy.  In this  ( basswood ply body & mahogany neck ) semi- they realy helped to lift the clarity and articulation of the bass response ( Basswood is great for fat mids and sweet highs, but the bass strings can sound a bit 'soft' ).  With M.Qs, there is a gorgeous balance of sweet fatness, but with a nice glassy 'edge' if you want to dig in a bit. For me they are a real favourite, but be aware that to a certain degree, the bridge and neck contrast each other, instead of them being night and day. I suppose this is in part the centralised positioning of the polepeices - and the fact that Tim has ( in a stroke of genius ) - created a lovely balance by putting Alnico V magnet in the bridge - and AIV in the neck.

To me,  this contrast is pure class, just a little more ( or less ) bite and treble around your basic sound.   I have quite a gentle touch however, and like a low action - so bear in mind that these beauties can get a lot nastier than I use them. This was of course more evident in my solid bodied S.G. - where they really find a good solid sonic foundation from which to project from.

I love all my B.K.P - but if I had to choose the most unique set that I own, it would be the M.Qs - hence them always ending up in my most played guitar.

Whatever you decide - I hope you enjoy your time here !  :)

Try this link:  http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=search2;params=YWR2YW5jZWR8J3wxfCJ8YnJkfCd8NXwifHNob3dfY29tcGxldGV8J3x8InxzdWJqZWN0X29ubHl8J3x8Inxzb3J0X2RpcnwnfGRlc2N8Inxzb3J0fCd8cmVsZXZhbmNlfCJ8c2VhcmNofCd8bWlzc2lzc2lwcGkgcXVlZW4=

Otherwise if it still doesn't work try this:
-Go up to the top right of the page where the search is and click the little magnifying glass
-Type in "mississippi queen" under "Search For"
-Click on " Choose a board to search in, or search all"
-Make sure ONLY the "Players" section is checked and click search

thanks! That really helped a lot! But Im actually a bit confused now...I found a website called tubesandmore.com and they sell gibson P-90's for only $62.96! That's almost half price! So it might be worth it to do a conversion from the humbucker's to the real deal...but then again, it also depends on how much the conversion will cost me (I would never do it myself, not much of a handyman...). But if all else fails, I'll definitely get those MQ's! I know I'll get it for my Epi Les Paul Jr. w/ a humbucker...thanks to everyone who helped give info ;)

MQs are the real deal though, just saves a lot of hassle. And the cover does give a bit more shielding against hum and interference, my MQs dont hum or buzz at high volumes in a dodgy-ly wired rehearsal room (the bassists stingray bass does though).

Up to you, but if you have the cash and are wanting a top quality pickup, cant go much more wrong than the MQs.
