Had my first rehearsal as a bass player

Today I rehearsed with some ex band pals for a 40th anniversary project in a few weeks. I am gonna play bass on 5 tracks and had my first rehearsal today. It went really well, I also felt what is different about bass playing. It's much more physical, and you gotta set those notes on the dot, my wrists hurt so does my back. But the Ibanez (BTB 670) sounded amzing, both played with fingers or pick.

On "Song 2" (Blur) I ran the bass through a Diamond Drive and it was perfectly nailing the tone of the original.

Very interesting experience. I am really looking forward to having the gig soon!

Hunter.....I used to play Bass in a band, it was such a funky experience.  I've also played Hammond / Rhodes in a band (or Nord Electro at least), both for about a year.  I like the way I thought differently with the bass, more melodic and definite. 

But, alas, it wasn't the guitar and you only have one life so.......

Don't spend too much time playing the bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well as many will know, I started out as a bass player though I learned guitar so that I'd have an understanding of chords.The bass playing helped me with guitar and the guitar helped me with bass.

I like to play bass at Jam nights and stuff in my local area. I find that it really helped me understand rhythm guitar a lot more (always been the lead player in local bands cos im shite HOT lol). Makes my rhythm playing interact with the kick and the snare a bit more on the groove.

but very nice hunter. sounds like you had a very nice time!

Thanks all, nice to see some other forumites took a peek into the lowend of the frequency spectrum! Surely I won't change sides, but I agree with the link to rhythm guitar. Surely helps becoming more tight and groovy.

its nice to have an e-bass sound in hiphop, or layer it with a synth. i also like it distorted - lemmy style ;)

Sounds good :) I really want to get a bass, I hate using a guitar through octave pedal for recording :lol: I also want to get into a band but no one seems to want guitarists, its always bassists, vocalists and drummers that are in demand. I think it'd improve my rhythm guitar playing a lot as well because you have to be solid.

It's VERY DIFFICULT to play guitar and bass equally well; they require different skill sets.

I love playing the bass, I'm not that awesome to use my fingers yet. I think there is a technique to it, just not as easy as it seems.

Indeed. Especially the right hand is extremely difficult.

But don't worry, it's just a 1 month project, I am not gonna give up the thin strings soon :O)

I don't get it Tom, with your skills you should be playing lead guitar in 4 different projects at the same time.
Just make your own band then, call it Tom & Co!

No one likes good music! I tried to play some new metal stuff (Killswitch Engage, Unearth etc) with some friends for a while, which is fun for a bit but its really not me and its so boring to play. Its the same pattern all the time. A bit of chugging, some "technical" riffage then the same breakdowns or whatever theyre called then a "nice" bit with singing. So cr@p.

Tried to get my own band together but again I cant find any likeminded people. When I seem to have something, I get to the point of asking to meet up for a jam or whatever and they never email back!

I've been playing with a school band on the bass since August, having loads of fun. Where i'd say i'm an alright guitarist, playing the bass is a whole new ball game. Sure some shared skill come in handy, but it's still tricky.

That drives me absolutely mad when that happens.
I gave up on trying to form a band some time ago; I'm going to have a try at it solo (playing some Vai and Satriani covers) after I finish off my A2s and hopefully I should get some demand.
