flanger (another EVH gear thread!)

ive heard much much more good about the MXR EVH flange than bad.

i have an old Arion flanger.  plastic case, but it's fairly sturdy, and the sound is very good, if perhaps a little noisy.  but then, old analogue effects aren't known for their silent operation!  the only other one i've tried is the MXR EVH, which i felt had a more predictable and cleaner sound.  it was very good, but i think i'd get the standard MXR, don't really think some stripes and a pre-set button are worth the extra cost.

If money's no object take a look at the Fulltone Choralflange as well. I heard a guy running one in stereo into 2 Boogie combos in a pub in Walthamstow a while ago and it was very nice.

Nope. I did pop to Wales to see the folks over Christmas and the New Year but haven't been in London for a while. I saw that band back in 2006.

You might be able to get a deal on a used ChoralFlange. The new version will have pitchbend vibrato, certainly not to my taste.

i've just noticed the stereo electric mistress looks good for the money... any idea if it could sound van haleny? or is it mainly for those psychedelic moments?

bah, i just ebayed the normal mxr flanger ;)

for a bit i was tempted by the ibanez one as its smaller and 9v, but hopefully the mxr one will get the synthetic brown sound i want anyway and i like the construction of their gear

I was playing with the MXR flanger alot last night and this morning. Its a great flanger, but has quite a distinct synthetic sounding tone indeed. It doesn't do really organic sounding stuff, or go really wild/experimental. Nevertheless it easily nails the Van Halen/jet engine flange... and further more it has some other nice tones - a flangey chorus, a filter, and you can get a sort of phaser out of it too, plus a tremolo.

Maybe an Ibanez would be a nice compliment to it, it seems like the Ibanez offers a more subtle sound, with some self oscillation too.

I'm pretty happy anyway, I won't be getting that Ibanez unless its really cheap.
