3 Types of Warpigs, 2 Types of Metal
« on: January 20, 2009, 10:01:16 PM »
This is a little instrumental I've been working on called 'The Weapon.' The guitar has a Ceramic pig in the bridge, a Pig-90 in the middle, and an Alnico-V in the neck. The selector is in the middle position so all of the pups are being used. The song is inspired by high speed thrash metal and also Doom metal. The guitar is tuned to B and has some very large strings on it so the sound is very heavy and bone crushing.

Guitar-> D*A*M Sonic Titan-> Matamp GTO (clean)-> Ultimate Attenuator-> Marshall 1960b 4x12-> mic-> soundcard-> Audacity

I put pics of the pups in an older topic; http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12169.msg155496#msg155496

I suppose the 'weirdness' of the tone could be from the cr@ppy mic I was using. It's pretty damn scarry in person though.

Lol, no problem. I think you'll find the Pig-90 to be a good pair with your other Warpig. It's got a smoother tone and is better for cleans but it still has massive amounts of gain for when you want to play heavy.

That is one scary guitar sound :D

... completely out of the ballpark I usually frequent - but I'm finding it strangely attractive, I had to listen to it a couple of times. The thing in front of the amp (D*A*M Sonic Titan) what's it doing? At one point I thought I could hear pitch-shifting or something going on, but I'm not convinced I can now...

^ The Sonic Titan is basically just a distortion pedal, though, it has a "JFET" power amp in it which creates real power amp distortion as you turn the level and gain knobs up. Its a very thick and raunchy type of distortion that emulates cranked amp sounds at a lower volume level. It's also good as a boost for a cranked amp.

heres the site if you wnat to learn more about D*A*M pedals;

Can you give me your opinion of the Ultimate Attenuator?

^ Shure
I have had it for about two months now and it was totaly worth the $480 usd I shelled out for it. I had to get mine with the 200 watt load upgrade to accomodate the cranked wattages of my 120 watt tube amp. I also got the 100 v AC tap which is probably my favorite thing about the attenuator since it keeps the amp running much cooler and doesnt realy affect tone.

I don't know whether or not it is any better or more transparent sounding than other attenuators on the market, but it does take a little of the bass out of the sound, mostly at very high attenuation. Despite this one drawback though, if you have an older style amp that gets realy hot when you crank it, this is the attenuator to get. With the 100v AC tap it keeps temps to a minimum and has universal ohmage allowing you to run mismatched ohmages between your head and cab with no problems. Any tone altering affects that it might have can easily be accomadated by a couple tweaks of the amps EQ, and the UA's also got a built in fan to keep it from overheating during long jam sessions.

It might be a little more expensive than the alternatives, but it more than makes up for what it lacks in affordability with its reliability, tone, useful features, and rugged build quality.
