guitar designs
« on: January 25, 2009, 07:55:21 PM »
so, yesterday a random idea popped into my head for a guitar design. so i drew it for fun. then it got me thinking and i drew up 4 more designs. i did all of this just for fun, because i like drawing, even though i'm not very good at it. but now i'm thinking, is it possible that anyone would actually want/ be interested in these designs? do custom shops or even big manufacturers ever consider taking in new designs? i quite like the designs i have, and they're all quite unique (i think), so i was just curious if this is all just for fun or if its possible i can actually do something with them.

If you were a big artists making your own signature model... then they'd listen.

But I'd doubt it otherwise!

i mean that's what i'd figure/expect. but just after i started thinking about this, i starting talking to someone through p.m. on another forum and he said he was just posting designs on a forum and some custom shop hired him because of that. so i wondered if he was just incredibly lucky or if there are places looking for new designs.

Big manufactures? Don't believe, if you show then after make a patent for the drawn... (please, before send to any company DO IT!)

Custom shops? Well, a guitar for you, completely for sure... Get the drawn and use it? If they like, perhaps, depends on the owner, but I don't think they would do if you wanted £ for the use...

EDIT: tell me the forum the guy posted his designs 8)

yeah the reason i didn't post anything is because i guess i need a patent or something. i know this is 99% going nowhere, but how would i feel if something did get stolen...

and i'm not interested in big money or anything, i was thinking maybe just the proto guitar and a very small percentage of sales.

Hmm, i guess it is worth contacting people... i guess it depends a lot on how detailed the drawings are and how feasable they are.

that's what i figured. as long as i can copyright or whatever i need to do (which i need to figure out) my drawings, i don't see the harm in just emailing as many companies as possible and see if they'd be interested.

and about the detail.. i was wondering that too. i mean i have the p/u config, control layout, jack, headstock... i mean i have everything but a 3d model and colors...

What kind of custom shops you mean? something alike Feline or something alike Jackson Custom Shop?

about detail, is everything in the right scale?

about custom shops, i was more thinking along the lines of what Feline does, but something like Jackson custom shop would be equally worth contacting i suppose.

as far as scale... thats the problem if its necessary. everything was drawn freehand... wouldn't really know how to draw to scale. i would assume the only necessary things would be neck length and bridge placement.

Basically is adjust your drawn to a scale... but you have to see if the free hand drawn will work, specially if you want specifics things, example: strings going straight to the tuners (like Fender)...
The headstock I drawn and then make in scale, had to be changed a little, to the strings keep going straight...

As you know that guy who was hired, ask him some hints :)

yeah i've been pm ing him and he said he makes up full scale drawings. sounds pretty difficult to me. maybe my ticket would be trying to sell these to guitar designers rather than manufacturers.

Start with the free hand, then make the scaled full size... Think that the easier way to start would be: drawn the fretboard and the bridge (on it's position), then add the headstock, body. then pickup, controls, tuners, etc...

EDIT: about the percentage, I think it's more alike they could hire you or pay an amont once (or annual, less likely in my mind) and use it... I don't think someone would pay percentage...

Full Scale drawings aren't so difficult, i used to upscale stuff when i was just 9 by using a grid system for upscaling the drawing, this was on disney type stuff but still helped a lot, took it into tiny chunks.

I wonder if this is what Trev Wilkinson does with Vintage guitars? Though i guess that's a bit more in depth again, as it's his own parts their using isnt it?

yeah i think how companies pay would depend on whether they were a big manufacturer or just a small custom shop. a big company sure wouldn't give you a percentage, but a small shop that doesn't sell a lot of guitars might.

anyone know a way i can kind of reserve my rights on these drawings? i just want to be able to post them for some opinions without worrying about someone stealing them.
