Soooo... rigs that you thought got that sound but didn't

First LedZep album, I just assumed it was all Lespaul and Marshall when it was in fact all Tele and Supro/Hiwatt.
All those big ass chords in AC/DC, Malcolm who with a Gretsch?!

Led Zep example is a famous one.

Early ZZ Top Billy Gibbons (such as Tres Hombres) - his "Pearly Gates" '59 LP and a Marshall stack?

Nope.

He used a Brownface Fender Deluxe for most early recordings, with a lot of Strats and Teles.  Plus Pearly for some things of course  ;)

For example, La Grange is a '55 hardtail strat (middle position) for the rhythm parts, through the Deluxe, plus Pearly for the solos.

Another one is Dimebag Darrell. Some people think he used his Warhead on Reinventing The Steel and at shows. But from what I've seen in an interview from his former tech, he used his RG100 and Century heads for everything up untill his Krank endorsement.

David Gilmour, comfortably numb solo. People thought it was his Strat through his rig. but turned out to be a Gibson Goldtop LP with P90's straight into the mixing desk.

Or Jeff Beck "Blow by blow"LP.In those days,i assumed it was his Strat,even though there was a LP on the cover...But the biggest shock,at the time, was  the LedZep I...a Tele and a Supro?!When you see Gilmour playing on a Gretsch or a LP ,you realise he will always sound as "Gilmour"...

Most of "Blow by Blow" was recorded on his Tele/Gib on which Seymour Duncan had fitted the first "JB" pickups.

Quote from Seymour Duncan himself about the JB pickup... "The 2nd reason was to give Jeff the output and tone when using a Marshall head that can be pretty clean when plugged directly in. 3rd, I wanted to make something special to give Jeff a distinctive sound that he used on "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" on the "Blow by Blow" Album produced by George Martin that also got Jeff Beck a Grammy"

The Darkness first album - i really would have never believed that was recorded straight into a Mac!

Metallica - Master Of Puppets: I always thought it was an EMG Explorer into a Mesa Mark whatever. Turns out its a Invader Explorer into a Mesa preamp slaved to a JCM800... so much for the classic Metallica EMG/Mesa tone I guess.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I've only heard Def Leppard playing the Rockman headphone amps, heard of ZZ top too, but not the correct album I think, many users though (from wiki)
Among the many well-known guitar players who adopted the Rockman early on are:

    * Tom Scholz
    * Alex Lifeson of Rush
    * Charlotte Caffey of The Go-Gos
    * Phil Collen and Steve Clark of Def Leppard
    * Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top
    * Megadeth on the album Peace sells
    * Bernie LaBarge on his CBS album "Barging In" (1983)
