Pickups good for Motorhead
« on: October 07, 2005, 06:44:54 PM »
I'm looking for replacement humbuckers for the lame stock ones already on my guitar. What sets are preferable for playing stuff like Motorhead, specifially off Bomber, Overkill, and Ace of Spades? Thanks in advance  :D

Hi Overkill!

I'd go with something with a bit more drive, Either a VHII or crawler, but it depends on the guitar - so that's the first question - what do you want to put it in?

Motorhead has a real old school tone. Mules or Riff Raffs would be great, I think.

I agree with HJM that a bit more drive than a Mule would be good, though I like Ratrod's Riff Raff suggestion -- or maybe even an Emerald?

Back in the day with M'head, Fast Eddie played a strat, as much to cut through the mix as anything else, I think!  So, anyway, for a mahogany body like the Epiphone, you'd surely want something with plenty of bite in the midrange.

And, hmm, given that Brian Robertson played a Gibson when he was in Motorhead, maybe an Emerald would be appropriate! :)  (I can see why he didn't last in the band, but I think there's some great and often-overlooked stuff on the Another Perfect Day album.)

It all depends what it's going in, if it's a Strat ala Fast Eddie then an Irish Tour will do it a treat(he's says after just bashing out some 'head on an IT Strat 8) ).........if it's a humbucker style axe then some nice and open with serious growl.........Black Dog or Emerald...........you don't want too much going on in the bottom end, more mid and upper end bite.
