what amp?
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:27:19 PM »
ok i play mostly metal on a gibson less paul menace (soon to get a ceramic m man and alnico v nailbomb pickups for bridge and neck respectively :D)
however i need a decent amp.... i play harder metal stuff like trivium, killswitch engage, slipknot, atreyu, bullet for my valentine, MACHINE HEAD, children of bodom etc... so im looking for an amp that can pull this off, (loads of gain... fat bottom end... punchy mids... and searing treble....u get the picture...
only thing is i live in a tiny bedroom and will also need this amp to be portable n not too big for takin up to uni etc...
also i want it for playing over drummer in band etc so needs some power... my price range is kinda 700 quid tops but im willing to get secondhand... (would also be handy to have extension cab line out for gigs)

so to summerise a combo (2x12 preferably) with some serious bollocks and in my price range for my style of music (bearable cleans is a bonus ;) ).....

thanks in advance :)

decent amount of choices... i'd start off by going and playing some in local stores, see if you can't at least narrow your choices down.

i'd also suggest getting some type of real cheap and small amp separately for bedroom and to take to uni with you. you're going to have a hard time finding a good amp for a band as well as for bedroom volumes.

Too really get that kind of sound, you need a 4x12.

If you're looking for a small-box compromise ... probably an ENGL.

I would go with a Marshall, I think. JVM410C used. An ENGL Screamer can bring you in the ballpark, but you will dislike it after relatively short time, as it sounds a bit "same" with all you put in.

Barring the bearable cleans, a 5150 combo (2x12) fits what you described. Look out on evilbay for 5150, 5150-II and 6505/6505+.
As D&L said above, though, you're *really* after a 4 x 12 cab, but this is not really compatible with a small room!!

trivium, killswitch engage, atreyu, bullet for my valentine, MACHINE HEAD,

All use 6505s and 6505+s, for what it's worth (or at least, they're all on plenty Peavey merchandising  Might not be the be all and end all of their sounds. Some of the other's might too, certainly a hugely popular amp with current mainstream metal bands.

Whilst a 4x12 may seem like it's big, it's really not... think of it this way, it will have pretty much the same floor footprint that a 2x12 has, it's only taller and a tiny bit wider.

I have the smallest bedroom in the universe, infact i've had to get rid of my bed and just sleep on a mattress on the floor so I can squeeze my 2x12 in, i could squeeze a 4x12 in too if i re-arranged the room a little.

thanks for the responses guys, my main concern is how heavy a 4x12 will be, anyone know how easy these things can be carried? do you need 2 guys? (im not strong at all, only 17 and will need to get it up n down about 100 yards a fortnight.... and also when it comes to uni i will need to get it from my halls of residence to my car etc....

I can get shift a 4x12 about by myself and used to all the time, course, I HAVE had a hernia, which may or may not have occured partially as a result  :P And I wouldn't advise moving them in and out of cars by yourself with any regularity, as sooner or later you're gonna get a great big tear in the grille.

I'd have the 6505 or 6505+. Fits the bill exactly, most of the bands you mentioned do use or have used one at some point in time.

i've got a marshall 4x10 which actually weighs less than my amp head. and my amp head is one of those slightly smaller amp heads that marshall used to make. so, basically its incredibly light. might be something to consider.

I know for an absolute fact that Killswitch uses dual rectifier roadsters for their massive bottom end. They did use a 6505+ on the song "Rose of Sharyn" though! Dual tracked it with a framus cobra
