New Armstrong Acoustic Guitar Day:

Nabbed this off eBay last saturday but had to wait until yesterday to pick it up. Is a 7 string flat top acoustic made by luthier Rob Armstrong. Was custom made for a band called 'Nagus' who do like modern folky stuff, then sold onto to some other random guy who plays celtic folk, now it's mine and I've no Idea what I'll use it for yet.

My Girlfriend's dad owns 2 Armstrongs already, a doubleneck 12/6 acoustic from the 70s (which is the nicest sounding guitar I've ever played but completely impractical!) and a mandocello with solid brazilian rosewood back and sides and fretboard that sounds lovely too. So as it's my 21st in May and I'm going back to Australia in september so I was considering getting a guitar made by Rob as a present to myself and memento of my time in England. Spotted this up on eBay and decided to go for it since it was a lot cheaper than a new custom and it's one of a kind.

Is a lovely sounding guitar, really loud, jumbo sized body. All solid, spruce top, indian rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck and ebony fretboard and bridge. The neck is a lot bigger and flatter than I was expecting, has really wide string spacing aswell as the extra string so that'll take some getting used to but I think I'll find some interesting uses for it. Hope so anyway.

I've got to say thats is a beauty.
I'm spending so much time playing acoustic these day. Trying to learn fingerstyle, it's like I've never played a guitar before.

It is indeed beautiful - and with those enviable body woods / neck and fingerboard dimensions, would be great for playing Jazz / chord melodies on.  I also love the shaping of that nicely rounded lower bout / cutaway.

My only reservation ( for my own preferences ) - is that I would need to use a standard 6 string guitar. You have found a real treasure though .  :)

Thanks for the comments guys. I've had a decent play on it now and have to say I do really quite like it. Started getting the hang of ignoring the top string and aiming one lower than usual with my eft hand unless I know I want a note from that string.

Mainly I love how loud and clear it sounds, I'm not the cleanest or hardest fingerpicker so it really helps to keep the volume up when I'm playing with my fingers.

Will hopefully record a little instrumental fingerpicky thing with some use of the low B string today and stick it up on youtube. Maybe I'll be able to convince my girlfriend to play clarinet with me.

Still haven't plugged it in to see if the fancy pickup is any good. Will take it to and practice on Saturday and see how it sounds through a marshall acoustic amp.
