Powerball/Fireball
« on: February 16, 2009, 11:49:46 PM »
First I want to thank everyone that has replied to my posts in the past couple of months.  This is a really good forum, so Thanks again and being so patient and informative

I had my heart set on a Powerball. Long story short due to the economy I have no bites on 3 amps I am trying to sell.

My idea was to eliminate my two clean amps and my Mesa Rectoverb and just use the Powerball for everything.

I play hard edged surf so I know the cleans from the Powerball will more than suffice and obviously the Powerball covers my passion for Metal.

So I am strongly considering a Fireball (cause I cant wait any longer)instead due to lack of funds essentially. Dang economy

So I have 3 questions

1) For Metal I mostly play Rythym and love channell 3 the low gain mode of the Powerball. Will I be able to get similar tones from the Fireball?

2) Does the Powerball put out better lows than the Fireball?

3) What Cabs have you found work the best for either the Fireball or Powerball, ENGL or NON ENGL BRANDS?

For most of this thread, it's already been answered (I believe) in the previous threads you've created (three so far) on getting an amp for metal and a cabinet.
"Would you like some lemon oil?"
"Oh, no thanks, I don't eat fruit."

1)  From what I've seen they're pretty similar, tonally.

2) I'd imagine so, but not much of a difference.

3). Popular chice has always been the Orange 4x12 but Vader ones have come up pretty fast. It's really a matter of personal preference, why not search around on something like 'www.netmusicians.org' and see how the combination's go.

Some people either love or hate the Engl cabs. As said, it's personal preference. Hope it helps, bud.

Never played a Powerball myself, but if you're after lower gain sounds you need to set the gain REALLY low on a Fireball. I have the gain at about 10 o'clock and it's getting into face melting territory.
Also, with the footswitch plugged in, there is no independent volume for the clean/gain channels. You need to have the gain set higher to balance the volume between the channels - either that or rig the footswitch so you can hit both buttons at the same time (the second switch controls master A/B)

The Fireball has a ton of low end and it is very tight.

In terms of cabs, I've never used an Engl cab. I have an Orange PPC412 which is fantastic, but I've also used it through a Marshall 1960A & B and a Mesa Recto oversize cab - it sounded great with all them.

Incidentally, I might be selling my Fireball......
