DC values for bridge warpig
« on: February 21, 2009, 03:16:15 PM »
i noticed a curious thing... the bridge unit of a warpig calibrated set i bought some month ago (actually my first BKPs!) has a resistance of 22.1k (the same declared on website) (no, i didn't measured it, i don't even know how to do it and i don't care this much... i simply read it - handwritten - on the technical sheet). recently i bought another warpig, this time bridge only, and the sheet says it's set on 20.1k.
could it be just a writing error or is it possible to have such different DC values on the same pickup model?

To be 2k out might indicate a writing error. My bridge Alnico Warpig is 21.7k according to the box, one would imagine the reading changes a bit due to the hand winding, but a 2k diff sounds like a lot! Still, as long as it sounds good no foul - I guess BKP's get wound till they are right - DC Resistance is only one part of the overall effect in the end.

i wondered if an underwinding could have been intentional... i will use it in a les paul so MAYBE a full-force warpig could have been too dark. but i realize i'm just wasting my pc keyboard with such elucubrations... :) if it's really set at 20k the funny thing is that i'm coupling it with a neck pig90 sporting a 21k DC!
at the end of next week i'll have my les paul gothic fully operational, so i'll judge with my ears... you know, it's just the kind of useless thoughts to kill the wait!

mines 21.6k

i think the scatterwinding might have something to do with it.
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

Is one covered and the other uncovered?  They may be wound slightly differently to compensate.

I think I've also seen the odd comment suggesting there'd be a difference in DC between a 50mm pickup and a 53mm one.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

uhm... they're both covered, but the new one has 50 mm spacing, vs 53 of the old one... i don't think this can be true, anyway... why on earth 50 mm pickups should be weaker? theoretically they should have more winds for the same amount of wire, but this should affect just machine wound pickups...

Narrower spacing = less total length of wire around it (i.e. because of the smaller circumference) for the same number of turns/winds?

Well, I was just guessing.... the 53mm coils are a little bigger, so to get the same number of winds you'd have a greater total length of wire on the pickup.
