and 80s metal was seen as one big joke

errr, has something changed that I'm not aware about.  What's all the "was" malarky?

The majority of people i have spoken to have said Faith No More fail or who are Faith No More?!

Maybe they appeal more to musicians. But even then, i don't see what the fuss is about.

Probably because you're talking to people under 30.

Actually, I haven't heard them for a long time (I I just scr@pe under 30 by a few months).  I oculd completely my mind on them.  I listened to Nine Inch Nails for the first time in a decade or so and although I used to love, I only ended up listening to a few tracks.  Dunno, maybe we're all getting old  :D

I'm guessing the majority of people who are going to Download will be under 30 as well, so it would make more sense to have a band who appeal more to the audience? I dont think anyone I know has heard of Faith No More either

And yet Joe has heard of Whitesnake and Def Leppard, both of whom are way older. But that's not the point. FNM have been out of the spotlight for a long time, so if you talk to a bunch of 18-24s they aren't really going to have a very informed opinion.
FNM ARE a great band and DEFINITELY deserve billing above Whitesnake, and their reunion is a HUGE event. Joe should be more open minded and just go listen to them, and if he doesn't want to? It's a festival, I'm sure there'll be something more to his taste on a short walk away.

its not that long ago (maybe 3-4 years) i was telling all my students about rage against the machine and they were all looking at me with blank faces - some that really should have known better too

then there was the girl in yr8 a year or two before that who told me she was really into 'that new band' green day - she wouldnt believe i had been listening to them at her age

When did i say i had never listened to them?

I've listened to plenty, point is, people know Def Leppard and Whitesnake because they are popular and multi million selling artists, Faith No More's most popular album sold 3 million worldwide.

Download festival is not full of 30 year olds

It's also not exclusively populated by 20 year olds either.

The majority is, hence why they shouldn't be headlining.

Well here's the jig. If Heaven and Hell are playing then it matters sod all whose at the top. Just as long as they play it'll matter bugger all when Faith No More play. Admittingly I used to love some of their stuff (Epic, Midlife Crisis, Ashes to Ashes) but I have agree with the others here that 'Faith No More' shouldn't really be that high up. I honestly thought Dream Theatre or Whitesnake would've gotten more of the prime.

I think you should boycott it on principle.

Personally I love FNM, have seen them a few times and they are seriously good live.
I think I hate being indecisive.
