80's Squiers are cracking, my drummer has one, his has all fender parts too, i have a 1999 mexican fender strat and i do prefere it, but i wouldent say that its really better and that its more of a personal preference thing.

But yes mexican fender strats are great, some are better than others, you should try a few until you find "the" one, a friend of mine that im in uni with just bought a black mexican strat with a maple fretboard and its one of the nicest guitars ive played full stop.

For my money, the best less expensive strats that aren't Fenders would be the ESP, esp. the MH-201.  The woods used are great, just change the pickups and it is a world-beater.  With my VH2s and phase/coil 5 way switching (look up ultraswitch in the ESP website), my guitar does EVERYTHING very well from tele sounds to Van Halen to Eric Johnson...I noticed that they are now selling these same guitars for more money with better pickups in them.  If you pick up a slightly used or closed out ESP strat and load it with BKPs, my personal opinion is that it rivals a Tom Anderson in tone and sound as well as durability.
