^ yeah, the romany's probably the one for cleans, but then its drive tone is going to be a bit different from the plexi (presumably). :)

Thanks for all the advice gonna try and listen to the Orange tiny terror combo, blackstar ht5 combo, fender superchamp XD and Laney VC15. From whats been said I expect all these will be better than the AVT50.

The practice amp she has at the moment is a Vox DA 5 and I would like a suggestion of a really good quality modelling amp as I am still not sure she would enjoy tweaking the knobs to get that bitchin' sound prolly be happy with a one click wonder - sacralige I know but thats the way it is sometimes. I will try and convince her to go valve but what other options might there be for easy life sounds?

Your wife is one lucky lady - it took me years of playing & gigging before I was able to appreciate the quality tones of the amps being mentioned here, let alone justify the cost!
I wonder if this is a case of "GAS By Proxy"...;)

No my piano cost almost £7000 so this sort of money on a gutar and amp is sorta payback if its what she enjoys. I picked up an Alvarez MD350C for her as well and that was an amazing VFM buy

Just have a cheaper car and you soon have the mney - or a pushbike then you can get some great gear

i don't think they really make a low wattage tube amp, that's probably it.

not a major fan anyway, to be honest.

Of the amps mentioned couple of shouts previous are they all pretty robust, last thing I want is anything great sounding but flaky

Looked into them a bit more the Blackstar HT5 and the Superchamp Xd are top of my list atm the Orange tiny terror is a lot more money and heavier, the Laney VC15 seems to have a lotta comments about running hot as does the LC15. In a different league but I am guessing reliable are the roland Cube 30X and 60 but I think tone wise these sound a lot like the DA5 only bigger with more effects/voices.

I am a little concerened that the Fender is very close to the hybred design of the AVT 100 with some DSP is it really going to be that much better ? I suppose this means I am leaning more towards the Blackstar!

i *think* (i could be wrong) that the fender is a "better" type of hybrid than the marshall. the fender has a tube power section, and at least some pre-amp tubes, while the marshall only has a solitary pre-amp tube. having owned the marshall (which was cr@p, i sold it) and having tried the fender, the fender did sound and feel more or less like a tube amp to me (albeit with some digital modelling thrown in, like the spider valve). the marshall didn't/doesn't.

btw, i think the blackstar has a lot of solid state circuitry in it too, but again, i think it has a tube power section, and one tube in the preamp. i think it does qualify as "tube", though. haven't tried it yet, unfortunately.

you're probably right about the cubes (i haven't tried the vox da5).

Thanks for all the input Dave MC - went to pick up my wifes DR and friends acoustic bass today but DR wasn't ready so I consoled myself by having one of the cool assistants demo a few amps - they didnt have the superchamp only the vibro champ (smaller 8" drive) which was blown away by a Jnr Blues fendor which in turn was blown away by the Blackstar HT5 to my ears that little box is amazing. Demo was with a new stock les paul (which is now amazingly light even in standard solid).

no problem, glad i could help a little. if you like the sound of the HT5 best, then go for it (i haven't been able to try it yet). :)
