Got my Crawler today!
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:24:25 PM »
From axiomatic.com. Very quick, got it in a week. The Riff Raff took a lot longer.

Anyway, I set it up in the Strat.

To be honest I was expecting a bigger difference. And then I thought 'DOH!' as I'd chosen its predecessor (the Duncan A2Pro bucker) because of its more balanced, thicker sound, and those were the exact same critieria upon which I got advised the Crawler...

And boy does it deliver :D more muscle, but it's not overpowering. It keeps the low output dynamics, but can be quite beefy sounding. So you get the extra gain, extra muscle, without the extra compression. Every frequency is well balanced, I've not had to touch the polepieces! I have it wired as an autosplit and positon 4 is less straty than before, but still straty enough for me. All good.
Thankfully also the higher output didn't destroy the feel and core tone of the guitar. It's still my Strat, not Whitehorn's, Clapton's, Knopfler etc... and it's a damn good thing (though anyone who hears me play would disagree)!

So yeah... thick sound in a Strat. Ok it's not a LP and never will be, and I'm thankful. I didn't want this strat to sound like a LP. I wanted a fat Strat sound. And I've got a very fast Strat sound.

Yum. The Crawler always strikes me as working better in Strat bodies, despite its being voiced for both Strats and Les Pauls.

Glad you got rid of the A2Pro; those things are so bland and toneless. That said, they'll sound great if you have a killer amp because that's what they do; they let the amp provide the tone.

Yeah, I agree.  I found it too dark in my particular LP, but I always thought it would sound good in a Strat.  Lower-output pickups which sound sweet and warm in a Gibson can sound harsh and thin in a Fender (IMO, of course).
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Same goes for Holy Divers, right? I wouldn't know because I haven't tried those (although they certainly sound like my cup of tea along with the Rebel Yells).

Is it just me or does anybody else think that black humbuckers on a white scratchplate alongside white single coils look cheap?
I dunno, perhaps you like it. That's cool. Not my thing though.
