Looking for a pickup, which one?
« on: October 13, 2005, 03:13:07 PM »
Hey there,
I'm currently the proud owner of a Charvel Model 6 with a retrofitted Kahler 2700 tremolo and a DiMarzio ToneZone bridge humbucker. I'm not really all too happy with the 'bucker anymore, since it tends to get a bit thinny in the top-end. I like to play music like Stratovarius, Dragonforce, Therion etc... and they all have this really smooth, 'round' top end in which the notes flow into eachother really nicely when they start shredding, almost 'liquid'
What BKP will work for this? I was contemplating the Miracle Man, but won't it be too harsh in the top-end?
Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to the forum!

You want a Miracle Man, or possibly the new Holy Diver. The MM will do powermetal like nobody's business!!!

The Miracle Man has a ceramic magnet, with a really nice, natural compression, plenty of bite, and an output that rivals an active EMG.

The Holy Diver has an alnico V magnet, and a slight midrange hump, kinda like a good JB. ;)

Oh, to address the harsh top end comment ...

I have the Miracle Man in a maple guitar. It's pretty much all maple, including the strap!

Thru a modeler, I do notice a 'hardness' , but I attribute that more to the solid state signal chain. I experience none of that thru my valve rigs!

Thanks for the welcome! :D
And for the info too, of course.

My Charvel's a maple neck-thru with poplar wings, so I guess that tonally it won't differ a whole lot from the guitar you described (jumping to conclusions a bit fast, but you get the idea ;) )

Which one of them is tighter? :P (For them fast, high-flying powermetal-riffs, I'll need loads of tightness, of course :) )

That one I can't answer, as the Holy Diver is brand new. The MM, to me, is the ultimate metal pickup.

I play in a classic metal band; imagine Iron Maiden, but with Lynch-inspired solos. In fact, I own two Lynch signature model ESPs.I'm also a big powermetal fan, in the old school tradition: Helloween, Jaguar, Praying Mantis, Cloven Hoof, etc etc

You can hear one of my band's songs here, http://twilight-odyssey.com/music.html
That will tell you a bit about my frame of reference, anyway. The MM has extremely tight bass.

I have a MM with double allen head poles in an all birdseye-maple guitar with ebony FB and there is absolutly no harshness through my semi valve AC30VT.  The double poles add a bit of extra bass and top,  and since its modelled on Zakk Wylde style metal (-very fast and losts of pinch harmonics), its very tight and accurate.  id say the bass is pretty heavy and very tight as well as the top end... excelent shred PU.  harmoics are awesome and easy to get and really does blow my EMG's away.
Comparison wise, id say the EMG 81 is a tad hotter, and slightly tighter bass (chainsaw on a oil drum), but no-way near as much bass as the MM (mre like a chinok hovering above ur head).  Harmonics and such are about even, the EMG is slightly more sensitive but they don't sound so good or as thick  (in my very most EMG-users have a load of effects to enhance their sound, thats what EMG's were built for) but the tone and top are better on the MM.

Go for the MM its seriously good!!

MMM
Im sorry to be persistant...but I'm on a mission to build the most badass guitar of all time.

The Miracle man is the tighter of the two, anything that has a ceramic magnet will have a very tight bottom end. I would go with the suggestion of the Miracle man, or for a more vintage tone, but still keeping the tight bottom end, the Cold sweat.

Also if you want that sweeten high end but plenty of power then Nailbomb is a contender too!
