Cheers Dave - will try 'neutralising' the settings tonight and see how I get on. I kind of always knew that the clean sound out of my apached strat would always be nicer. The dirty sound out of the esquire is awesome though and none of my other guitars can get close to it!
I think I hate being indecisive.

I'm not surprised - it's built for a bit more gain I think  ;)  Gives you some nice variety compared to your Strat  :)

My Esquire scratchplate should arrive any day, so once it has I'll get a get a pic up  :D  (groan...)

I'm leaving the upgraded (non-BKP) in there.  It sounds excellent so I'm sticking with it  :D

The colour's a bit lighter than it looked on the GV website, even better I think.

Cheers Philly - the guitar village website pic was indeed much darker and I agree that it looks better a little lighter.

In truth, to play a Tele bridge pickup through a huge clean Fender Twin at considerable volume is absolutely stunning ( quite literally ).
 :D

Oh dear - that's now mad me want a Fender Twin. I do doubt that I would be able to play it at volume at home though! Who's got one that I can try out  :)

I have one you could try ( if you could TELEport to West Yorkshire).   :)

If you ever do get the Fender Twin G.A.S. though, mine is still for sale. Too big and powerfull for smooth 'After Dinner'  Jazz - now that's all I study / play. It does have a 25 watt / 100watt switch at the back, but I needed an amp I could carry easily and a guitar case on public transport if needed.

If you ever do get to own a Fender Twin  ( under any circumstance ) Try replacing the Quad of 6L6 valves with a quad of N.O.S 7581As . Same family of valve - but even more  headroom and clean 'soundstage' - as they say at Watford Valves.  I always think that Jan / Phillips 7581A  are to 6L6 valves - what 6550 are to EL34s.

My resolve to first learn the guitar / conversion to Blues music - was due to listening to a local Pub Blues band back in 1978 - where the guitarist was playing a battered Tele through a 100 watt Fender Twin.   :)

Bit off-topic, but how do you think 7581As would sound in place of 6L6s in a 5150/5150-II? I know it's tonally a totally different ball-park from a Twin, but me likes clean headroom!

I think you would be pleasantly surprised - not only at the crisper and 'bigger' tonal attributes, but also the fact that each 7581A is capable of pushing 35 watts as opposed to the usual 25 watts per valve.  The only drawback for some would be that they do not go into saturation / clipping at all easily - so unless you want to blow the back wall of the room off trying ,  for distortion - you will have to go the Dave Gilmour route - and put the distortion 'colour' at the front end / saturate the pre-amp stages , and treat the 7581A output stage as a big ( and mostly transparent ) wall of sound.  Of course your 5150 will probably have the  output circuitry designed for more punishment / clipping than my 'Twin Amp' .  At least on the 'Twin Amp' this is compensated for by the 25 watt / 100 watt switch, which sounds not much quieter at full tilt, but does make the output stage more 'saggy' at a similar volume setting.

I also noticed that whilst using 7581As  ; on the amp bias / quad balance adjustments on the rear of my Twin - I had to adjust the pots as far as possible to bring the current draw into line with 'recommended values' - whereas even the mighty 6L6GC only needed a mid point setting.

Worthy of note also is that I gather it could be an expensive mistake to fit the clean ( but much more capable of sag / saturation ) short bottle 6L6WGB ( as I used in my Laney LH50R-II and I gather the Fender Bassman uses them as well ) - as I am informed that the circuit conditions / optimum Bias / Anode ( plate ) voltage for a 6L6GC or 7581A can be damaging to a 6L6WGB. Obviously if the amp techs here on the forum wish to confirm / deny this, it would be interesting to read.  :)

I was thinking more of the notoriously relentlessly clean 70s 'Silverface ' amps - or ( in second place ) the current 100 Watt 'Twin Amp' for ultimate clarity at the highest volumes.  I gather the Tweed versions of the 100 watter - or the 65 watt Fender 'Twin Reverb' re-issues are somewhat 'softer' in tone when pushed.   :)

Cheers for the GAS inducing replies guys! My previous experience of Fender amps is that they are extremely loud - I don't think I could get away with that considering Jane told me that my new tele and 5 watt combo were too loud!

Yes, put that way - a Fender Twin would constitute " reasonable grounds for divorce ".

Meanwhile I am sure that guitar sounds great through just about anything !   :D
