How many 8 string players are here?
« on: March 27, 2009, 09:52:43 AM »
I will be joining you soon with the first ever angled BK  however, I think I prefer Warpigs to Nailbombs from what clips I've heard but Tim has said the range of an 8 string can effect the sound in a negative way on Nailbombs... Think I'll have to speak to the man himself soon enough but I don't know if any has either of these 2 pickups in an 8 string on here to talk about it

He may well suggest going lower output like the black dogs on my 6-string barry. Check sig for how this can sound ( no additional overdrive or distortion in those clips). My words of advice: keep an open mind about lower output pickups! Even if high output pickups would work just fine, don't think that the lower output ones won't work just as well, or potentially better!

I've got an 8 string, although I don't play it all that much- I'm starting to try and use it more, but the 'traditional' 8 string music just isn't my thing. Can get some killer Sunn0))) style riffs and sounds out of it though :)

Hm, i think an 8 string along the lines of low B to high A would be most interesting. Then i guess a 25.5 scale would be enough, and a 7 gauge high a would probably have decent tension.
Or am i way off?

Complete with BKP!

That is a sick guitar. It is actually my buddy Nick's. He is a member here (Vik Deakins) and a bareknuckle dealer. Here is a clip he recorded with that guitar. It sounds sick as all hell. http://www.nemecide.com/axefx_02.mp3 He just lowered the price on it. He has over $2000 in it between the guitar, BKP and custom pickguard, and it's like brand new. He's only selling it b/c it hurts his hand to play it. Also I play an 8. Here is a pic of mine.

I have the Pro version of the guitar in the above post. It's pretty neat! It's out of commission right now, though, because I'm trying to get new locking tuners on it. Anybody know for sure if the Grover Roto-Grip Minis are direct replacement for the regular non-locking midsize Rotomatics?

Anyway, I plan to put a C-Pig in mine. What kind of specs does your 8 have?

I have an 8 that I built myself a few years ago. At first I used pickups that I also built for it, which were okay, but in the end I replaced them with BKP's. So now it has a Warpig bridge and Cold Sweat neck, which sound awesome!

Bridge: (A)Pig, HD, Jugg, PK, (A)NB, Crawler, Aftermath, RY, Abraxas, Emerald, BD, VHII, RR, Cobra, Sinner, Trilogy, Stockholm, Supermassive.
Neck: IT, SM, CS, Trilogy, Emerald, Cobra, Blue note.

That's nice! Where did you get the bridge? I didn't think Hipshot was making them until more recently than that.

Well, it was probably about 3 years ago I built the guitar and I don't think Hipshot had been building 8 string bridges for long at the time, but that is what it is. I built the guitar as much for the challenge of building as for the guitar itself. It has a 28.5 inch scale length but I moved the bridge 1.5 inches back into the body, so the 12th fret is in the same place relative to the body which makes it feel much like a normal Ibanez RG, and keeps it from being neck heavy. It does sound huge - the extra scale length and the amount of mass in the neck gives it masses of tone, even on stuff played on the top 6 strings!

The current project is a Les Paul type 7 string, but after that I have a fan-fret 7 planned which should be fun to build! Tim already seems happy to talk about an angled pickup for the bridge, so I'll be interested to see yours Philosoful!

Nice. Mine's barely longer than that at 28.625". I love what it does to the low strings, but the effect on the high strings I'm not so fond of. I think I'd really love an 8 with fanned frets to get things working well across the whole range.
