I think I have seen a pic of Jimmy Page with one of these in a really old guitar mag from the early/mid 80s. Philly - get your collection out, it's time for some research!

Oh dear.

 That's the one. That guitar looks like it could be used as some kind of saw.
I think I hate being indecisive.

The point of the strut from the headstock to the body on both the Roland and the Lyre was to transmit string vibration from the nut back back to the body. How do you spell Deja Vu?

there was one screwed to the wall of the local chicago rock (or shite rock as its known locally) for a long time!! - they literally drilled straight through it.  They also had a lime green peavey T-60

i made very generous offers on both, but they were turned down.... a while later i heard they had done a revamp so i went and asked where the guitars had gone - to the skip apparently!!!   not often i miss a guitar in a skip.  i did point  out to them that the roland would have been well over £2000 when new

Still think there is some headway in the plank guitar - one piece of timber and a lotta carving - bet you could make something that looked real cool and with the right timber it could sound cool as well - wouldn't be an add on like the roland. wouldnt need to be very wide - could even make a laminated plank and then carve out of that dragons or snakes are my fave for the side bars. Also if it didnt work would be easy to make it into a neck through  :)

Oh and though I been learnin the piano I am starting to think I may try twanging !!

I believe you may have

The Dragon Plank...Dont fret, Bob (all puns are intended) - I think Minarik would rip Bradocks arm off for that one.

Phew, I'm glad someone else found that.  Good to see Pagey dressed up for the photo session.

Its not really a joke, i just think you do need to spend some time playing the guitar and it will all become clear.  (i say that as someone who doesnt actually play very much now - but thats because i am busy building them)

There are many issues with what you are suggesting, most importantly you seem intent on putting form before function which invariably leads to a bad designs.    Maybe if you sketched down an idea we could see exactly where it was going wrong. (or possibly even going right)

anyway, you are talking about making a guitar out of one piece of wood... its been done a few times but personally i dont think its advisable, those one off's are kinda the exceptions that prove the rule.  First you have problems with finding a suitable piece which will need to be absolutely flaw free (easier said than done),  and its also very wasteful building that way.  I suppose you have the advantage that you dont believe wood choice makes a difference to the tone so i guess that opens up your options a bit.  Weight would also be an issue.

then you have to wonder what the point of the supports is.  Necks should not be perfectly straight.  To me its more important to have a controllable neck bow than it is no bow at all and the supports would take away all that control.

As an art project it would probably be vaguely alright, but that rules out a lot of the UK luthiers.  Sometimes art and guitars can mix in fun ways... like the manson mermaid

I think its cool when guitars are built with an artistic mindset up until the point where the artistry overcomes the functionality.
