Neck Through Guitar
« on: April 02, 2009, 11:13:34 AM »
Guys, if I were constructing a neck through guitar, with no neck angle, how far proud of the body wings would the neck typically be, before the fingerboard?  10 mm?  5?

It depends on the height of your bridge, then from that height, you need to subtract the height of the fretwire, then the height of the fretboard. Make sure that you adjust the bridge so the saddles have enough up/down movement :)

I dont think thats the question

That would be height of strings.

Not height of neck

And I still dont understand - do you mean any clearance of the bottom of the FB over the body or the top, playing surface?

Sorry, cr@p at explaining myself.

In a neck through, 2 wings join the central bit that extends to become the neck.

The wings couldn't be glued flush with the TOP of this central but, as that would only give the fretboard as clearance.  So how far down the central but would you glue the wings?

I understand that this would depend on the bridge, but is there a rule of thumb?  A hardtail Strat bridge has a pretty low profile...  less than 10 cm?

Trying to get my head around the dimensions.

Depends on whether you are going to pitch the neck, or have it run parallel to the body & whether the bridge you are going to use can be recessed.

I have neck through guitars constructed both ways.  IIRC the bottom of the fretboard on my KV2 (non-pitched neck/recessed OFR) only sits ~5mm proud of the top of the body, but on my RR1T (pitched neck/TOM) the centreblock joins the body with the bottom of the fretboard flush to the top of the body, but by the end of the fretboard it protrudes by around 5mm - the angle means that the TOM bridge does not need to be recessed.

Cool - that's kinda what I though.

I'm thinking about building one, and I think that an angled neck might be a little beyond me.

it really does depend on the bridge.   like TM says, get out the pencil and paper and draw a full size side view.  it you can do it on paper it becomes easier in real life

for a rough guide look at a strat or tele and see how high the fretboard sits from the body (not from the scratchplate).

...hmmm... planning was never my strong point...  alway more "throw it in a pile and see what happens".

Incidentally, has anyone ever used David Dyke for wood, and other bits and bobs?

I agree with Wez about David Dyke.  Got a preslotted ebony board from there a while back and it was spot on.

Planning it out will save you a load of time and money. Christ, I sound like my dad

I don't think he's too far away from you Mark, he's in Horam, East Sussex... i'd recommend visiting and seeing what stuff he's got- I find it interesting (albeit rather tempting) to see what bits he's got kicking around there. It's not a massive place (it's attatched to his house), but if you're 30mins or so away, then it's worthwhile imo. Things like tuners I tend to get from other places, and I don't like their truss rods- I always go elsewhere. For the woods, it's great though, even if you just want to pick out what neck laminates you want- I often go there only having a rough idea of what i'm after, and decide when I can see what each piece looks like.

Is that where you got the bits for your 8 string, Oli?

Yea, I got all the woods from DD, but the hardware was from other places (bridge from Hipshot, tuners, ferrules, and straplocks from eBay, and the neck ferrules/bolts from Simo at the UKGB forums).

I have just used them for the first time and got a really nice piece of swamp ash from them. I told them want I wanted and that it was going to be left natural and they emailed my some photos within 30 mins of what they had meeting my needs, phoned them back ordered for a very reasonable price and had my wood in the post next day. You cannot complain at that service.

and here is the wood
