Yes that should be right, (listen to the other tech metal fans !) nevertheless, you show some signs of maybe an alternative to the PK :

'Invader in the bridge position and although it's decent for single note metal rythyms, it's far to saturated/muddy/harsh for the fast, complex, death metal stuff :'
[/i]
Any ceramic BKP and also most of the A5 ones may cure that issue

'a set of pickups that deliver an open, organic sound :'
That is the pure definition of the NB !

'but that have plenty of midrangey grind to them :'
no one beats the PK on that point BUT don't know if the NB would be so bad here...

'to acheive a smooth, liquid like lead tone :'
NB ! NB ! NB !!! that's exactely the NB which is at his best on that field. Look at the clip from Lepermesa called "september solo" in the player section, and of course the one from Tim, those ones must convice you !

'and a grindy yet articulated rythym sound' :
no one beats the PK here, which is also very very clear so much so that it exposes your playing a lot. The NB is also very articulated (it is one of his main features) but maybe little less (don't know...). The PK is expected to be better for detuning because it is soooo articulated and sooooo clear !

'The highs should be present but not to bright or ice pickey :'
ANY BKP should fit the bill here, I suppose, no ?

'and the bass should be relatively tight but not uber compressed' :
NB ! The PK is the most tight BKP, some say it is surgically precise ! The NB is little less tight, a little....

'The guitar will be run through an ENGL Savage 120 and due to the amp's inherent uber-tightness pickups like the Painkiller and C-Pig might just over compress the sound.':
If the tech death specialists of this board say this would not be a problem for the PK, then trust'em !

When I asked Tim for a 'less-tight-less-bright-more-warm PK' he said : NB (but to put it in the context, it was for heavy metal stuff, not for tech death !)

yeah! definitely NB is a great alternative to PK for leads (but for rhythms PK is better)... this is my opinion based mainly on the simple fact that my playing is not so tight to benefit from an uber tight setup... NBs are enough for me, but i see why technical players prefer PKs... anyway they sound both great.

Ok so the V will be outfitted with PK's for super tight rythm work; and I shall soon be purchasing an ESP Horizon which will be outfitted with Nailbombs for leads.

for a second I thought "tech death" was some awkward genre of metal unbeknownst to me, I'm not sure how many times i've scoured internet guitar forums with threads like-

"need some br00talz death metal"
"no thats melodic metal core!"
"incorrect its actaully gothic-nu metal"
"quite you fools its tech metal!"
Rise above the crowds
Wade through toxic clouds
Breach the outer sphere
The edge of all our fears

I despise the "Tech" prefix being used to describe metal bands. 75/100 times it should be replaced with "pretentious", 20/100 it should be replaced with "Can't play remotely as well as we think we can" 4/100 it simply means "we're pretending what we're playing is really complex, but it isn't really" and the remaining one it might have some merit.

....

What a scientific statement... in which the famous 'imo' might be missing !
Anyway, back to topic, considering the fact the guy may have the chance to be in the remaining one percent you consider, what would you recommend him for his 'tech' music ?

FWIW, I tend to look at the music as a whole, rather than any one specific part. If it sounds good, who cares if it's 80% as complicated as it purports to be? In fact, it shouldn't really be purporting to be anything, much better for the band to shut up and let the music do the talking. Whether other people put my band in the hardcore category, the 'metal' supercategory, or any other random assignment you care to mention, has no bearing on the actual music, which may or may not also be cack.
Ultimately, none of it sounds like the Beatles, so we should all rejoice in that uniting fact! (Sorry 38th).
