What u guys think? in this current economic climate?
just pondering on peoples thoughts as i've been offered a job working for someone making amps, plus i've also considered doing it myself from time to time.

id guess it depends on the vibe of the amp? low wattage, vintage, hi gain.
other than cornford, right now, i can't think of a british boutique builder making awesome hi gain 100watt heads.
although, it would cost a lot to build those and as a new company i guess thats a gamble

I think so just because so many boutique amps in the UK come from the US, in comparison there's only a few UK builders.  And I think if you biased your range more towards a Fenderish vibe then why not, most UK builders are more orientated to classic Vox Marshall vibes (which is fair enough considering they are UK builders!), so that side of things is well covered.

But really you would need to do a few prototypes and then see what other guitarists thought of them.  I'd say the biggest problem will be getting hold of the right trannies without importing them or getting charged a wedge for custom units (if indeed the suppliers will even produce custom units for small batches).
That's why Cornford wind them in house....

yea transformers are the biggest issue here in the UK.

Danbury and Ceriatone are the best cheapest options for transformers, although John at Champ Electronics winds some fantastic Partridge clones and various other things!

I have a friend who is retired now but he winds transformers heavily interleaved paper laminated.. the way they should be.

There are options other than buying Heyboer/Mercury Magnetics which seems to be the thing to do in the US.

Majestic transformers will do one offs and small orders and aren't outrageously priced.

Dennis Cornell uses Majestic Transformers for his amps.

If you look into winding transformers (and at the moment I am gearing up to have a go at this!) then doing one off really isn't that profitable, especially if you have had to do any design work.

I wasn't aware that Cornford wound their transformers in house, I thought they used a chap down in Kent for this.

"Custom designed in house and hand-wound" doesn't really mean a lot........

Your probably right then, not sure where I heard it but maybe I've confused the 'designed in house' statement....

Don't know about Danbury, but Dagnell Electronics (and associated companies) have gone into administration.

They used to make many, if not all, Marshall's transformers so I don't know what will happen there!

I only know this because I am trying to get some repro 50W mains transformers for later 70s JMP amps made (these have a relatively low B+ of 380 V, whereas the standard Marshall unit gives a B+ around 470 V). I suspect my delaying ordering 10 units didn't tip them over the edge........

It now look like I can get the units from a company that is rising from the ashes of Dagnell/ Clairtronics, but these will be made in Malta!!

Will we have ANY manufacturing left in the UK soon??

I meant Dagnell - sorry!!!!

I think there's loads of space for another amp company.  Making it successful enough is the trick  ;)

"Designed in house" is what Cornford say on their blurb, however what this exactly means is anyone's guess.

I've specified transformers for several projects in terms of reflected impedance, band-width, secondary taps etc, but does this mean I've "designed" it?

The actual build details, eg interleaving pattern, wire gauges, turns per layer etc I leave to the transformer winders who know loads more about this than I do and probably ever will!

I am trying to learn more about transformer design and winding. There is a real dearth of info about this on the web. I've managed to get my hands some useful books, and to chat with a couple of people who actually do know about this.

I hopefully should have a go at winding some of my own output transformers at some stage, although this will be purely out of curiosity than any attempt to go into production (but then I said that about guitar amplifiers...........).

Get in touch with your local university electrical engineering departments they may well have a lot of useful information especially old thesis which could give you some interesting designs or suggestions for transformers
