Pig 90 questions
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:06:15 PM »
I have some questions regarding the Pig 90 pickup. I have a Gibson SG Classic and am considering replacing the pickups. Mostly because I want one to be RWRP so it is hum-cancelling quiet in the middle position. I also would like some added beef (low/mid range). The SG is a pretty bright guitar, so I don't need extra treble accentuation.
I also would like some more output. I played a regular SG before with a Rio Grande BBQ bucker in the bridge, which was output-wise (about 14K) about right for humbuckers.

I play in a raw and heavy rock band (somewhere between old Sabbath, QOTSA and Soundgarden) through an old Orange OR120 with added MV so I can get roughly JCM800 amounts of gain without ear damage and still have that sweet Orange sound.

I am pretty sure I want the BKP91 for the neck position, but have some doubts about the bridge. I am considering both the BKP92 and the Pig90. From what I've read on the forum, the Pig 90 is perfect except for one thing. In an e-mail response Tim told me the output is a whopping 20.5K, which I am afraid is too much! I am also afraid with an output of 20+K it will hum like crazy.

So, onto the questions:
1) Would the Pig90 be too 'metal' for what I am looking for and should I get the BKP92?
2) What are the tonal differences between the two?
3) Does the Pig90 clean up nicely with the volume control of the guitar?
4) Does the Pig 90 hum more than a regular (Gibson) P90 because of the huge output?
5) Should I consider the BKP92 for the neck instead of the BKP91 when paring with a Pig90 bridge because the difference in output is less?

So, that was a lot!! Sorry for the huge first post. I just want to be sure to get the right pickup for me. I don't have the time or money to keep changing them. Thanks in advance!!

i have no eperienca with p92s, but i can tell you for sure that 1) pig90s have no more hum than 8k MQs, and that 2) for your genre a bridge pig90 is simply perfect!

oh, i forgot...
yes, it cleans up nicely (my experience is limited to neck p90 but the DCR is the same) and no, i don't think that output difference is so important unless you mix a single coil and an humbucker... neck MQs, set - if i remember well - somewhere around 7kohm of DCR, are often coupled with highoutput bridge humbuckers... maybe tom will join this thread, he's got a pig90-MQ set. MQ should be similar to a standard p90 in terms of output, so p91 should be fine.

Wow that really helped a lot! So you don't think a Pig90 would turn my sweet SG Classic into a metal machine? Thanks!!

well, you will surely have an heavy guitar, but we're not talking about modern death metal tones... pig90 will cover greatly Sabbath and Soundgarden, with a touch more of raw heavyness that, at least in my opinion, is always a good thing! there's some pig90 sample made by _tom_ . he plays doom/stoner rock, so not really heavier than you.

Thanks man! I also got a reply from Tim, which at this time of the day is simply amazing! He said, in short, that the Pig 90 is not a metal only tone and that the BKP91 is a good match for the Pig 90 also. His description of the tonal difference between the BKP92 and the Pig 90:
"Serious beef-Pig90...................classic vintage P90 but at it's most muscular, BKP92"

So, Tim and dheim's responses combined settled this for me. I'm ordering a Pig90 bridge and BKP91 neck! Hoozah!!

Mr Diamond,

How did the Pig90 work out for you? I'm in exectly the same position as you were some time ago.

My '06 SG Junior will arrive in a few days but I'm afraid the Gibson P90 will not be able to keep up with the Black Dog in my other SG...
