Quick question about swapping machineheads...
« on: April 28, 2009, 04:50:12 PM »
Hi guys,

I have a Patrick Eggle New York Pro, and I want to swap the stock Sperzel non-locking machineheads for locking Sperzels (to improve tuning stability- my stringing technique is a bit cr@ppy, i suspect  and i use the wilkinson vintage-style trem quite a bit). As far as I'm aware, the locking Sperzels are a direct swap- don't worry, I'll check for sure with Sperzel before I buy anything, but if anyone else knows if they're a direct swap or not, please let me know too.

Anyway, my main question is, assuming they are a direct swap, is it simply a matter of unscrewing the old machineheads and then just screwing the new ones in place? Or is it more involved than that? (Please don't assume that I know anything about changing machineheads, I've never done it before and I know nothing about DIY- if you think, "Oh, I don't want to patronise him, I'm sure he realises that,", please say it anyway, odds are I won't know it! )

Thanks for your help in advance :)

excellent, thanks jonathan, I was hoping you or one of the other luthiers would answer :) And is it just a matter of unscrewing the old ones and screwing in the new ones?

If you get the urge to use pliers (as my friend seems to occassionally), resist! ;)

Or perhaps a really big hammer to make sure that the old ones are nice and loose....
