John Petrucci pickups and sound
« on: April 29, 2009, 01:15:52 PM »
Which BKP will the the closest to the D-sonic fitted as standard in his music man ?

And with which rig would it combine well to nail the sound of "pull me under" (amp / pedal ?) ?

I'm not sure whether it's very close to the D-Sonic, but Tim recommended Nailbombs to me for the JP tone (Ibanez RG), lots of muscle but really good cleans. Amp would be Mesa Mark IIC+ or Roadking/Lonestar, an Acoustic Sim or just Chorus/delay would help with the clean tone for 'Pull Me Under'.

don't know about which BKPs, but if you're talking about the images and words album version of pull me under, I'm guessing he wasn't using a d-sonic then as it's a relatively new pickup, i think.

I guess he used a tonezone (bridge) and a humbucker from hell (neck)

quite possibly, I'm not sure of the exact pickups he used, but that sounds plausible. :)

Petrucci used the steve's special and a humbucker from hell for images and words then moved to the Air Norton (or a variant of) for the neck position in his ibanez JPM model. the cleans are the two hb's split in the centre position.

I don't think the steve's special is that old

Tim told me for that petrucci sound you need a ceramic he recommened the painkiller for me!

As for amps and fx Mesa Mark IV, Eventide Time factor , BB preamp , RC booster and Keeley compressor have gotten me the perfect scenes from a memory tone which is my all time recorded tone

Well.. I realised that I asked for 2 questions in one !

so the first one will be : which BKP is the most similar to the Di Marzio D-sonic (ceramic) fitted as standard in the Petrucci musicman guitar ?

the second one is : What BKP would you recommend to nail the riff of "Pull me under" with an all mahogany superstrat (neck thru design) ? I have the 2007 remastered /remix version of this song and the sound is an ABSOLUTE blast. Love it so much. Here is (only) the standard version. The riff starts at  0:17

Mesa seems to be the amp to consider but....ceramic or not ceramic ?

I'm not sure whether it's very close to the D-Sonic, but Tim recommended Nailbombs to me for the JP tone

Tim recommended the Nailbomb to me for the Basswood RG, but i was also looking at the Ibanez S series (mahogany), which he recommended Painkillers for.

Quote from Tim's email to me:

The Petrucci tone requires a little more power (than Chris Brodericks) and I usually recommend the
Painkiller 7s for that and I'd definitely go that route if you go with
the mahogany S7320. If you decide to go the RG route I think Nailbombs
will give you the versatility to cover Dream Theater to Satch etc and
they always seem to be a staple fav of the 7 string players.

Hope this helps

thanks guys.

Any idea of how the D-Sonic does sound like ? And a BKP equivalent, as far as it is possible to say....(I really had bad experiences each time I've tried a Dimarzio, and there is so many models available...)

uhm... it doesn't sound like something too special (i mean tone, i listened to that song maaaaany years ago an d i remember it was quite cool), nailbombs should achieve it with eyes closed...
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...
