questions on delays
« on: May 03, 2009, 01:24:08 PM »
having only ever really used a DD-3 for shortish 250ms,  i was wondering about the sound differences and possible advantages in using a smaller footprint analog pedal, and if anyone can recommend one.

I'm after a bit of increased battery life, and just straight up delay. ill look at kits (depending on complexity) and whatever else.

i did consider this!
whats it like in comparrison to the DD-3?
ive heard with longer delays the analog pedals break up, but i dont know how much delay you need before that happens.

The MXR is the best delay sound I've used, but the DD3 has 2 advantages for me.

Firstly, it's easy to adjust on the fly. I use 3 delay settings, and not having room on my board for a bigger unit, I can twiddle between songs quickly with the DD3; near enough is good enough on it's controls, it having the delay time switch. The carbon Copy OTOH is quite sensitive, having a lot of range on it's controls, so you can end up a long way from your ideal sound with only a small control deviation.

Secondly, even though the MXR CC has a lovely clear, but warm, sound, you need (IMO) digital clarity to cut through with long delays/several repeats in a live context. As my base sound is already vintagey warm, with not expecially clean cleans, the digitalness is ok for me, and the way it cuts through suits me better.
Otherwise, for instance, I lose the last few repeats in the mix.

Other people's set ups and requirements will vary, and If I only used one delay sound, or only needed shorter delays I would prefer the MXR.
Hope this helps.  :)

Ive got a modtone analog delay, pretty good for the price. nice and simple. i only really use it to for short delays to fatten up leads, but i quite like the sound of it. First delay ive owned and dont really have much experience on them to comment in great detail. But reviews ive seen for them all seem pretty positive.

ever thought about a simple rack unit? the TC electronics G-sharp is very very simple, cheap and has got a wide array of delays and reverbs.
and doesn't sound bad. even if no delay i tried has yet managed to reach POD levels. i simply love those effects!
