They were dark and chalky sounding.

Which one did you hear or try?
Was it a modular one?

I have to say that I haven't found that with my rack preamp but it is going through a single ended power section of my choice (MJW) and through my fave speakers, but your experience may be different

I cant speak for the "Guitar Centre" range - the Rebels and the Renegade and Tourmaster ones

Can you give us an outline about what qualities you were looking for in the amps. The parameters you used to base your opinion on would be beneficial to me, as 'I didn't like this but I liked that' without context, is like pissing in the wind to me.
