Rewireing a Epiphone Les Paul Custom
« on: May 20, 2009, 08:25:25 AM »
I have a Epiphone Les Paul Custom with a black dog in the bridge and a mule in the neck which I want to totally rewire and change the jack, switch pots and caps for some better quality componants but to be honest I dont know which wire and caps etc to buy,any help would be most helpfull.
I want to put some bumblebee caps from http://www.fake58.co.uk/Parts%20For%20Gibson.htm in there would this be a good choice and are there any better alternatives.
I really am in unknown terrotory for myself here.

I use the following for doing thewiring from switch to pots etc
http://www.allparts.uk.com/wire-gauge-vintage-style-cloth-covered-p-4361.html?p=product

I then use this shielded wire from the hot of the volume pot to jack.

Capacitors are all a matter of choice. There is a whole raft of opinion on which is best, Bumble Bees, Sprague 715, Vitimin Q, Orange Drops, Mylar, ceramic disc etc etc. Only real way to decide is install and try.
If anyone is interested in a pair of NOS vitimin Q's 0.022uf, I could do them for £4.00 each plus postage. I also think have a pair of Sprague 715 & 716 kicking about as well. £1.00 each plus postage.

Unless you want to spend a fortune I'd just go for CTS pots and orange drop caps with some cloth covered wire just for the aesthetics.  The difference will be noticeable in how the pots taper and the quality of the rolled off tone.  Also, as the caps are only cheap you could could get a few and try different values.

I got paper oil caps for my prewired pickguard and tele control plate and to be honest I think orange drops would have been just as good, to my ear anyway....
