Eminence Speakers
« on: May 29, 2009, 12:26:56 PM »
I’m just wandering about eminence speakers, they seem very cheap for USA made speakers and just wandered what the general opinions of them were compared to Celestion and Jensen.  Their range is bewildering but I’ve heard good things about the Wizard and Red Fang.  Some say the Wizard is better than the Celestion G12H that it is based on, any thoughts?

I’m looking at replacing a Celestion Seventy80 to be used in a 1x12 open backed combo.

Black Powder £57
Red and White Blues £73
Lil Texas £68
The Governor £52
Red Fang £106
The Tonker £54
The Wizard £65
The Tonespotter £61

Prices from Thomann, does anywhere stock them in the UK?

I'm a great fan - have tried a Red White and Blue - which is a clone of the old (Chicago made) Jensen C12N, the Wizard (which is in the tonal range of a Classic Lead) and the Texas Heat which has a greenbacky type tone but with some of the Jensen cut in it.

Here is a UK distrib - stock not as good as it used to be:

I'm using The Governors in a open backed 2x12, and i love them! I'd like to try out some of the higher powered Eminence speakers for putting into a couple of 1x12s at some point.

Tom

I have a Wizard in my Peavey Classic 30 and it is excellent - really good speaker.

What impedence are you looking at? I have a brand new The Governor for sale - 16ohm. Project that never happened... We could maybe reach a deal....

thomann prices aren't as good as they used to be, what with the falling pound... :( and tube town's prices are similar...

i seem to remember reading on the musicradar forum that hartnoll guitars could get any of the eminence speakers into stock for you, but i have no idea what the prices would be, or how long the wait would be.

I haven't really tried very many eminences, i've just had a similar problem to you, actually finding somewhere which stocks them, as i've been recommended a texas heat for my VJ cab... I need it in 16 ohm impedance, which seems to be the problem.

Well the Wizard seems to get great reviews but my only concern would be the cleans that nobody seems to mention when describing them.

Elliot, Mike, can you describe the Wizards a bit more?

I have had the Governor, I currently still have the Black Powder, Cannabis Rex and - in my Krank 1x12" - a custom Legend.

Governor - similar to the V30, a bit more focused and more aggressive. Perfect for hardrock/metal.
Black Powder - bright, glassy, subdued mids and bass. Great for superclean sounds, chiming chords or low-tuned metal sounds.
Cannabis Rex - super round and fat sound, powerful lower mids and bass. Great if you want to tame an ice-pick heavy amp/setup.

I think the Governor is a speaker that would appeal to most people. If I wanted a very fat and big sound, I'd probably go for a 4x12" with two Cannabis and whatever more neutral speaker fits (Governor, Wizard, Texas Heat), if I was playing in a death metal band I would go for a 4x12" with two Black Powders and either two Governors or two Texas Heats.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I have the V-12 Legends in a 4 x 12 poplar Krank cab, and the Swamp Thangs in a 2 x 12 poplar Krank cab.
Perfectly happy with them.  :D

I have no problems with cleans but bear in mind that my amp (Classic 30) has a pretty clean clean channel - not exactly a death metal amp!

I would agree with previous comments though - the Wizard is a very good classic rock speaker - when I got it I was toying between that and a Classic 30.

Ive just been on the eminence site and its got sound clips of every speaker; for distortion, clean and overdrive all playing the same pieces of music.

I found it really really helpful.

After blind testing every speaker (i.e. without looking to see which was which )  my top 4 were:

1 Wizard ( the cleans were really nice on this i thought really sparkling)
2 Cannibis Rex
3 Red White and Blue
4 Commonwealth

Why can't celestion do something simliar :?

I'm off to get some wizards
