Tone!

Hi Guys

so after some horrendus experiment combining a GT-10 with my traynor tube amp, yesterday i've decided to completely rip this thing out of my effect chain and just ''straight line'' into my amp.

there we go! finally dynamics and stuff were back.

so now i've got to invest into a few pedals to at least have a little more control on my tone. and i was curious to see how you guys see your amp tone.

currently, my idea involves two EQ pedals. which would go Guitar ---) EQ1 --)Preamp ----) EQ2 ---) FX(Phase and Chorus) ----) Power Amp. Speaker.

I use the first EQ as a booster for my guitar, and the second EQ as a corrective shaper. I've thought about adding an  overdrive before or after the first eq, or after the preamp, as a way to 'simulate' power tube breakup after preamp breakup. from what i've read, (and heard) isn't it what an OD is supposed to do?

I like to build most of my effects and i've settled on some BYOC kits, their EQ looks very good! General Guitar Gadgets also have fairly well priced kits and i'Ve already build their ITS8 Clone.

bear in mind, this is for a metal cover band, so as much as i like having a cleaner type tone for practice, this requires some amount of grit to sound authenthic :D

so what do you guys do to your guitar signal to get that tone you want. all styles! I'm just looking for different philosophies to try out before I actually dish out cash on the kits.

I do one of three things:

For my "protmetal" project:

Either I pummel my Splawn Quick Rod on the clean channel into distortion with a treble booster

or

I colour the sound on purpose with a fuzz pedal



For my "true" metal project:

I let the Splawn run the way Scott intended it, with the preamp valves screamin'!!


I don't use any EQs, and for the "true" metal project I use ZERO effects, not even 'verb. For the other project, I use a host of things like Echo, rotary effects, flange ... whatever is needed!

I usually run an iso cab feeding into the PA and at least one 4x12 on stage. This will probably change next year as I am looking to augment the Splawn with another amp, and have my short list assembled. :)

I would ditch the idea about the first EQ and get a Hardwire CM-2 overdrive. I have one, it is amazing and costs less than boutique pedals (while soundind great). Digitech really hit the jackpot on this one. Since it has both a bass and a treble pot (unlike most overdrive pedals) you won't really need the EQ anymore and it works wonderful as a boost.

Second if you want a Phaser I love my MXR EVH phaser (the red&white one). I have it in front of the amp though, cause that is the part about Van Halen's sound I like!  :P MXR is really where it's at with phasers.

Third, Chorus. Well I have to admit my experience is quite limited, the ones I had (Ibanez, DOD and Electro Harmonix) I was not happy with. I actually think the lowly Boss CE-5 is a good choice if you don't want to spend tons of money on a pedal.

I noticed you're lacking one staple effect - the Wah pedal. Sure you don't need one?

I was indeed looking at the MXR Phaser, but maybe the script reissue.

I'm trying out a Maxon  from a friend to see if i'll need the EQ. but from the looks of it, this pedal might be it as far as OD goes. http://www.maxonfx.com/Reissue_DSDS.php :D

as far as wah, yes, it's a staple, but it's not a priority right now. first is getting the drive sound sorted out. second if the second EQ if needed (my traynor already has a post master solo boost, yes, it goes to 11 :D ) and if not, well, Wah and volume are a must.
