inexpensive overdrive/boost
« on: June 01, 2009, 07:42:45 AM »
So I'm looking for something that'll give me an overdrive that won't compromise the dynamics of my Holyidver, but inexpensive as well (I'm currently broke as all hell). I'll also use it to give a boost every now and then. I currently have a DS-1 that I haven't touched in a while, as well as a little big muff. I like the muff, but it does fuzz, and there's nothing nuanced about fuzz. Any ideas?

To Do: Bridge Nailbomb in chrome (?)

Try the Dano Cool Cat Range.  I had the Transparent Overdrive, it sounded great but I ended up selling it due to the location of the buttons, it was hard to tweak live.  However soundwise it was way above it's price range.

I'd also go with the Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent OD - or for something with more oommph the Danelectro Cool Cat Drive (an OCD clone - for some reason cheaper than the Transparent on Ebay). - under £40 with postage

An alternative is the Tonerider American OD.

Yet another recommendation for the Dano Cool Cat Transparent OD here !

Very good pedal. Outstanding value for money.

Boss SD-1, can't go wrong. Still have mine even though I use barely use overdrives now.

in addition to the danos (which i haven't tried, but hear good things about), and the tonerider (which i haven't tried, but i have the chorus, which is very good), the biyang overdrive od8 might also be worth a look. I got one recently, it's pretty nice. It sounds like a tubescreamer (to my ears, and without a tubescreamer on hand to compare it to head to head), but has a bit more versatility in that it has 3 different modes, and swappable chips, to let you fine tune the tone. I like mine, anyway. I'm not sure if they're bulletproof in the way that the really expensive boutique stuff is (my biyang fuzz's LED went dodgy, I've got a replacement on the way), but they sound good, anyway, to my ears and are reasonably inexpensive. That's assuming you like TS-style overdrives, of course. :)
