Footswitch mods
« on: June 02, 2009, 03:10:17 AM »
so i've had the idea of modding a bit of my footswitch to be able to add the effect i want before the channel i want (OD on the drive channel, comp on the clean.. etc) and i've found that the way my footswitch works is with a simple  toggle footswitch. from the looks of it it's a 1PDT. I'd add a 3PDT switch to make some sort of parallel loop that is engaged or disengaged by the channel switch. but i'd need a 3PDT with one Normally Open contact and 2 Normally Closed. does that exists? or should i take my idea to the drawing board with a circuit?

Your channel footswitch will probably be switching a circuit (probably 12V) on and off to drive a relay which will do the actual channel switching.
If you are using effectively the same switch to switch effects in/out of your signal pathway in front of the amp then the only real potential headaches I can see are hums/buzzes by having those circuits in close proximity within the switch.
 Hopefully JPF will chime in and give you the full story.

you'll be fine with a 3PDT - can't imagine you'd get much hum, just try it - worst case scenario is you've wasted your time a the cost of a switch + enclosure.

if you're worried about noise from proximity, use the 3PDT to operate the channel switching relay and hook up another relay to switch your effects.

here's an idea to get you started...

Thanks for the idea!

but my concept has evolved a bit further. it basically involves my old ADA mp-1 preamp run on the clean solid state mode which has a compressor included.

i'll run  my guitar into a dual A/B box i've made myself. guitar goes in, goes either to Traynor preamp or ADA preamp. goes back into the switch, and the channel path keeps going to the Power Amp.

basic idea is
                A===Traynor===A===
Guitar===                                     Power Amp
                B===ADA=====B===

I'll accomplish this with a 4PDT switch. 2 poles running one AB for the guitar input to the specific preamp. and 2 other poles running the AB to the poweramp, so i won't ever split my guitar signal into two as the
unused input and output will be shorted to ground :D

my previous attempt involved a 3PDT switch routing my guitar to either the clean or od preamp. but the return signal was Y-ed to the poweramp, which gave an audible gain loss. and some noise as the grounded input still sent dirt to the Y-ed output.

this should keep me waiting until i get my dual amp setup.

Good luck. Sounds like it should work well.
