Amp Tech for Marshall Jubilee in the Bristol area?
« on: June 10, 2009, 10:37:07 AM »
Mornin',

I have a Marshall Jubilee that i need to get serviced before selling it. Does anyone know of a good amp tech in Bristol or nearby? I used to use the guy in Sound Control but can't track him down.

Cheers
Dave

I really wouldn't bother getting an amp serviced before selling - you'll not make the money back when you sell the amp (i.e. you won't get any more for it, imo).

This is assuming the amp works fine and has no issues at present - you're just paying someone to check it out and tell you it's working fine when you know that already.

As for a tech in Bristol, no idea - I'm up in Newcastle.

I sold a Rivera combo last year which had always been prone to crackling and making unpredictable spaceship noises, and also had a defective LED.  Probably all simple stuff to fix, but I'm a total ignoramus about amps and also don't know any techs.

Any road up, I eBayed it, but made a big song and dance about how temperamental it was, as a warning to buyers.  I got a good price, and the guy who bought it went straight out and gigged it!  He said yeah, it whistled a couple of times but he wasn't bothered.  :)

So I agree, it probably isn't worth the expense of getting it serviced, so long as the buyer knows what they're getting.

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Not tackling the 'is it worth it' issue

Amp techs, I have tried two options with my Marshalls:

1. Bletchley factory, I am just down the road anyway, so I could drop them home and they would turn it around in ten days (or, if the person that starts it goes on holiday, it could be three weeks...). Marshall will charge through the roof, and will insist that the power socket IEC thing NEEDS changing which then costs another £50.

You would have to post it there anyway, so...

2. Martamp / MJW / Martin. Buy a roll of bubblewrap off of ebay, wrap it up, post it to him (£8), and he will do his magic. Reasonably priced, great service and he keeps you up to date with things. Feels much more personal etc. I can't remember how long my JMP2203 was up there with him for, but it wasn't long!

Twinfan will probably help explain more
