I disagree with the Shiva. It's clean channel is addictive, but it's clean. No hair to be had there. And the drive channel is more JCM800 with a bit more compression. I would recommend the Shiva as an allround rock amp for anyone who wants to use it for all from Clean to Rock (not metal).

Cool I've never played (or even seen) a Shiva in person. I was under impression that the Shiva was one of Bogner's more "classic British" oriented amp. Didn't realise the cleans stayed clean either.

It might be a good idea to check out Carol-Ann Tucana and Tone King Metropolitan.
The Metropolitan really got me interested.

Hunter was closest in his guesses, although I'm not after a specific tone. The Splawn covers modded plexi to modded JCM800 territory. I guess what I'm looking for is something that is a bit darker, thicker sounding, but not sounding modern or 'recto'. NO DUMBLE CLONES, either.

The MJW sounds interesting, as does the Blankenship.

I'm looking for an amp that yes -- will play clean with some hair on it, can be cleaned up with a 5751 if need be, and will not fall apart when I hit it with a treble booster or fuzz.

For what you're after, you're describing the MJW Orion.  I like a slightly darker, thicker sounding amp and the Orion can do that if you set it up that way.  It can also scream like a banshee if need be too!

Don't know much about dark amps, not my bag, though I feel that my Carlsbro 60TC is a bit dark.

Peters are good stuff, they have some badass highgain tones. But maybe too much in the ballpark of Splawn territory.

Another maker to check out is Orange - their custom shop stuff.  Maybe the OR50 or AD50.   I have especially lusted after the AD50 for some time !

None, never seen one over here. But a few guys on the rig talk boards rave about them!

It seems like he no longer does 4 amps, but a combined amp where you can pick which of his amps you want each channel to sound like. The clips sound good! :D

i haven't tried anything you listed other than cornford (and you said you didn't want that :lol: ). Are you after a mainly clean/vintage-style amp?
