ROLANDS NEW CUBE 80X
« on: June 19, 2009, 10:53:58 AM »
 :D
I have two favourite amps at my desposal at this time.
One is a 70s WEM Dominator outfitted with a (don't laugh) EV12L!
That amp (with a MXR micro amp in front gives AC30s a run for their money-seriously!
New to the Makor stable is a Roland Cube 80X.
This is a digital amp.
Before you all go running for them there hills, allow me to assure you that this diminutive little beastie sounds fabulous.
I played last night at a great jam in Oldham, Lancs with two other guitarists using AC30s.
Of course, their sound and projection was superb.
Who can argue with the sound of a tone generator such as a Vox, but I have to tell you they were silenced when i cranked my little baby up!
The tone, effects and ballsy nature of this amp blew them away.
Shimmering quality cleans with an assortment of overdrives to pass away for!
I've owned many types of amps including the truly terrible Line6 Spider.
Although this is digital, it responds just like your boogie, vox, marshall or fender.
It's more powerful and lighter than most and built like a brick shite house!
When used with guitars fitted with Bare knuckle pickups, you are sure to find that elusive tone, but this time, without the fuss.
It records directly with sick tone and dynamics and theres a line out, and mp3 aux in to practice your licks to.
Yummy.
I know there's a certain vibe which is tangible with valve amps.
However, it may be time to start thinking of breaking down our prejudices regarding technology and realising theres a credible alternative at last.
Your thoughts on a postcard!

This sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to look into this amp even though I've been scared off the digital amps by a Line6 Spider. Man I couldn't get a decent sound out of that thing!

i haven't tried the cube 80x yet, but the other cubes i've tried have been pretty nice, especially for heavier music on a budget.

we stock roland cubes regularly where i work. but the cube 80 is a serious improvement on the previous flagship which was the 60. very clear, not boomy at all, very useful looper function. it's almost like a 3 channel amp with the footswitchable solo function.

the 60 was good but a bit boomy. this one's really clear. they have a nice clean take on the ''DLX Combo'' patch. it's almost precompressed with alot of headroom. really nice. and they go for around 600$CAD so it's a steal for a gig worthy amp.

true. not valve, but it's easy and it works :D

For some reason I always thought you were in the USA!

Anyway, I think it's time for a Johnny DeMarco demo:

Anyway, I think it's time for a Johnny DeMarco solo.
Actually, I'd love to be stateside but I'm having a financial nightmare so I don't think it's possible for some time.
Johnny is a great axe wielder and very amusing, but finding sounds is such a personal thing that his vids are but a snapshot of what's available.
I seriously approve of Rolands gear-they last, have great tone and listen to the needs of musicians.
The 80x will accompany me to recording and live situations for the foreseeable future.
For me, they work their mojo just fine and dandy (that sounded awfully American, didn't it)
regards
Jeff

Blame the tiny speakers for most of it. The 12" cube's are great for little SS amps.

Tho, i've heard some phenomenal tones from buskers with the cube...

I'm not sure if its the speakers, if I hook up my ipod the sound is surpisingly crisp and lovely bass response, the speakers are the best part.  My only guess is that maybe they fiddled with the COSM on this particular model and it turned out bad, as I've heard from others good things about other cubes cosm's and bad things about this one.

Exactly!

They're Hi-Fi speakers, not guitar speakers. (and they're tiny)
