Delays
« on: June 25, 2009, 04:29:40 PM »
What are you using? what do you like about your particular delay? what dont you like?!?

i'm considering my options at the moment, i used to own an oldish ehx memory man but got bored with it so i'm looking for something new and different now.  was thinking of maybe trying out the malekko 600 bright...
not sure what else is meant to be good at the moment.

on a personal level i'm not particularly interested in digital but feel free to rave about whatever floats your proverbial boat!

Carbon Copy here.

Sounds superb, really really good
Takes a little while to set right
Not good for adjustments on the fly as the controls are very sensitive
Best to set and forget

Maxon AD-999 for pure analog delays.

EH memory man Hazari for lots of features, 1 being a looper.

T-Rex Replica for a great sounding delay (almost analog if you want it to be) and tap tempo.

BOSS RE-20 (COSM - modelled Roland Space Echo)

Pros:
Portable and runs on a standard 9V supply
Hammerite finish is tough enough to last and looks attractive
Sound is comparable to original (though not identical)
Designated Tap Tempo footswitch
Oscillates and reacts like a real tape echo
Interfaces with an expression pedal
It has a smiley face which brightens up my mood

Cons:
Smiley face creates electronic noise in the circuit even when bypassed
Can be a bit sluggish to react when speed knob is turned, giving detuned repeats (designed to replicate original)
Cannot set separate volumes for tap tempo and normal use so needs to be reset each time
I too use chicken as a measurement.

DD-3 (MIJ) hardly ever use delays, this one sounded ok but has only few delay otions.

That's not a con! That's the most fun thing in delay pedals!

I have a T.Rex Replica and think it's marvelous. I really love the Carbon Copy too but would miss the tap tempo.

I can't fault the Replica at all though. Well, the naff brown finish and the price, I suppose.

Akai Headrush:-

Pros

East to use intuitive looper
Tap Tempo
Echo
Delay
Good clean Hi Fi sounds, good bypassed tone
Price

Cons

Big
No need for 6 tape head outputs
Looping could be longer (although longer than some on the market)
Not as warm as analog but to be fair, I'll probably get a carbon copy also

Has anyone used the Digitech Hardwire delay? I've been thinking about getting one (if I ever get my xbox 360 sold), mostly because it also features a looper which I think would be fun to mess around with. Does it do the detune thing when you change the speed? I love messing around with that haha

Looks like its either that or the Headrush for a 2-in-1 type job

I like the look of the Hardwire, I've always fancied reverse delay as well.  If I were buying again I'd definitely try it out.

For looping I think it might be harder as theres only one switch but I'm not sure.

Like the look of all the hardwires, especially the reverb....

the best delay i've ever used is the POD one... i mean the digital delay. i've heard bad things on standalone Line 6 effects, though.
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

Like Maverick, I have a Boss RE-20.

He pointed out the pros and cons clear enough. Though mine doesn't make any noise/hum it does alter the sound a bit even when bypassed but the original did that too. The reverb on it sucks just like the original.

People love the old Roland Space Echo because of it's quirks and the RE-20 does one hell of a job replicating it.

The big problem with the original is that it's a big heavy machine. You'll need one for use, one backup, several others for spare parts and an arsenal of fresh tapes.

I'm using an old Arion that I found at a yard sale for $5.00
No, really it sounds very natural. My use of delay is very subtle anyway.

I've got a Moen Pretty Dolly.

I bought it because it was cheap, but it actually does a good job.  Not a bright, clear digital delay, but a warm, sludgy blurry delay, which I really like.
