Another Warmoth question
« on: June 27, 2009, 05:28:07 PM »
Afternoon all. A while back I stated on a thread that I was seriously considering moving my 57 reissue strat on. I've now decided, with the help of Matt Schofield, that I should keep it but change the neck on it. The radius of 7.25 is just too rounded for my liking as I'm now used to 9.5 and over (up to Gibson type radius but not sure what that is). The frets are also a little too small for my liking - mainly due to being used to the 6105's on my tele What I need to know is if I ordered a vintage modern neck from Warmoth, and gave them details of the guitar it will be retrofitted to, is there a good chance it will fit nice and snugly?

I'm looking mainly at necks with a rosewood board and bigeger frets - probably 6105.

Cheers,

Ian.

I think I hate being indecisive.

OK, I'm no strat afficionado but Warmoth build their heels/neck pockets to Fender specs so if your guitar is a genuine Fender & not something unusual like the Heavy Metal strat of the 80s or something, then a Warmoth strat neck should fit.  Have a trawl through the neck options pages on the Warmoth site, I think there are some comprehensive explanations of what it will & won't fit.

Gibson's standard radius is allegedly 12" (well, according to at least two of the guitar builders that post regularly here it is ;)).  PRS' standard radius is 10".  Warmoth offer a compount 10-16" radius as standard (nice & flat on the upper frets but still easy for barre chords on the lower frets) or just about any straight radius in ½" increments from 9" to 16"...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

This is corect.
I've put lots of Warmoth necks on various bodies by Fender, ESP, Jackson, and even my weird no-name tele body, and have never had an issue.

Cheers guys - it's an American Vintage model so sounds like it should fit okay. Just need to get some £'s together now.

Is that personal help, or just influence from afar?

Regarding the neck, if it doesn't fit I'd go so far as to say it's because Fender screwed the neck pocket up!  Warmoth stuff is extremely precisely made, much more so than Fender.  :)

What neck shape/timbers will you go for?

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Nice idea!!
Think about a raw exotic neck... Canary wood will sound very alike maple, look "alike" a vintage maple and need no finish (the feeling of raw neck is suberb!!!)

You can choose a ton of other woods if you want a different tone from standard Fender (also look, but it can be changed adding a headstock veneer)

Haha, from afar!! The V shape on my tele is the one I find most comfortable so something simlar to that. Nothing too fancy, probably maple with a rosewood board. Will keep an eye on the show case and see what comes up!

Nah, it ain't fancy... Just the advantage of raw neck... try one in a guitar shop (I know PRS has some, don't know other 'factory brand' with them)... It just fell awesome...

For a not proeminent V neck, the back shape is Clapton:

Beside what you want is kind "standard" and then much easy to pop on showcase, sometimes the shorter way is making a custom order, last time I talked with some guys about it was taking 2 to 3 weeks to get a neck (without finish what add some more weeks)

Cheers Fernando - I'm going to give it some thought before jumping in.

I'm still not completely 100% sure of a rosewood board. I think all maple looks better on 2 tone sunburst (mine is 2 tone) and a rosewood board looks better on 3 tone burst. Maybe I need to do some photoshop work!

Recently I ordered a custom body - they said it would take 4-5 weeks but I had it within 10 days!

I'm leaning towards the maple. The more I do that the more I wonder if it's a worthwhile thing to do. I can get on with the frets and radius okay but it takes me a few minutes to adjust when switching guitars!

Why do you think all maple suits this guitar better? Is it for the same reasons as my 2 tone/3 tone comment earlier or something different?
