question for the sweep pickers
« on: July 13, 2009, 03:08:33 PM »
when your sweeps are descending, you get to the lowest string, and your repeating the pattern, do you upstroke the lowest string and then skip it to ascend or do you skip the lowest string then down pick it

ie do you do A ala Yngwie, Jeff Loomis

Code: [Select]
E||--15p-12----------------------12-15-||
B||---------13----------------13-------||
G||------------12----------12----------||
D||---------------14----14-------------||
A||------------------15----------------||
E||------------------------------------||
     V      V  V  V  ^  ^  ^  ^  ^  V

or B

Code: [Select]
E||--15p-12----------------------12-15-||
B||---------13----------------13-------||
G||------------12----------12----------||
D||---------------14----14-------------||
A||------------------15----------------||
E||------------------------------------||
     V      V  V  V  V  ^  ^  ^  ^  V

The second, it feels so, so much more natural.

I certainly tend toward B. It flows more easily.

Which doesnt mean its the right or wrong way. They sound different, and have different emphases. Use the one thats best for the circumstances.

i think i tend towards the second one. I'm not terribly confident at sweeping, though.

i'd probably play the first note with an upstroke, too. and use a hammer-on for the last. I'm kind of a lazy player... :lol:

If I was going to do it (and I'm definitely not), I'd choose method B.

probably should have said I'm a B person, but I still can't get the hang of some fancy bodom and nevermore sweep patterns so I started over analysing like I do and started trying to work out if A or B is "better"

I think I tend to do it in the 'A' style... although my sweeping is rather sloppy through lack of discipline and practice!

Doesn't matter. Learn it both ways
Either way the pick ends up being the wrong side of a string when you swap from the down to upstroke.
If you want it to get cleaner or faster it's the change of direction from the wrong side of the string you need to practice.
If you learn to do it both ways it will transfer better to other parts of your playing
