Sorry to hear that, Johnny.

Do you need to stay around London, or can you look elsewhere?

Sorry to hear that Johnny, welcome to the club though, same happened to me already quite some time ago.

Hope you still have some savings or a working wife to bridge the gap til the next job.
If somehow possible enjoy the time a bit and create some healthy distance to the past.

Good luck on your search!

sorry to hear that,

Funnily enough I had something must like that happen to me a while back, me and my dad both worked for a tutoring service and we were both called in for a "meeting" only to discover we were both fired at the same time! Pops was fired cause he good with the paperwork but bad the system, and I was fired for being good with the system and bad with the paperwork.  The irony left me laughing in tears.

On another note, what is "made redundant" mean as in job-wise? That's most definitely a UK phrase, I'm guessing means the company says your job is up in the air and you could be fired?

It means that the job/role itself - as well as the person - is no longer needed by the organisation, so they "have to let you go" (if you find out that they subsequently gave your job to someone else, then the position wasn't genuinely redundant).

It's different from being fired, because there's no suggestion you've done anything "wrong".  Under UK law you're entitled to compensation - there's a legal minimum amount, based on your age and how long you've worked there, known as "statutory redundancy pay", but many employers pay more than the statutory amount.

this is bad news, needless to say. i'm also worried about my job, the only thing i can do about it is work hard. no idea what i'd do if i lost it.. i'd need a couple of weeks to calm down and think about it i guess.

my best wishes mate

the recession should be peaking around about now, although you still get job losses for the 6 months after the peek

Sorry to hear that Johnny. I understand how you feel - I got told last week that I'm being made redundant at the start of September. Total stitch-up by a company using the recession as an excuse to make cuts, but it's left me pretty screwed. There's no jobs in the same field (print media/journalism) within a 50 mile radius, and I moved into a flat of my own in April. On top of that, I can't move away right now, so it's got to be commutable distance for a new job. Time for a career change i think.

I hope things work out ok for you, and for anyone else who finds themselves in the same sh!tty situation.

I went along to see about joining the f**king Territorial Army but as I'm left handed and left eye dominant I can't use a bloody SA80 Rifle without tearing my face and hitting myself with hot shell casings ....

I'm so disparate for change but I'm not even fit to be shot at..  :(

Personnally I don't think this will be the case.  I think it's going to get a lot worse and draw itself out for a bit.  I can see it easily lasting a few years.

Hope all you guys all find something before yo ahev to give the job centre a visit, I hate that place.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Yes... It's not over yet!

They call it a "double dip" depression.

I've been a right misery predicting this "dead cat bounce" for a while & here is my rationale...

  • You've held back your spending/borrowing since the financial terror of Oct/Nov 08
  • You have benefited from low interest rates for months so you've maybe got more money in your pocket than before the "recession"...
  • You feel the worst must be over by now...
  • You are still in work Aug 09...
  • You get SPENDING AGAIN!

THEN... AFTER THE ELECTION 2010 - you are no longer being protected from market reality by Gordon & other scared politicians seeking re-election...

The SH1T really hits the fan....
