its got a pretty hefty bass response.
well, i realised i had once pair of speakers out of phase, once i corrected that it sounds just like my other cab.

When i did my other cab, i compared it to the stock jcm900 1960a that this cab used to be. I remember that it did sound better, but at the same time i had done all the above, i also had the V30's in there, un-broken in. So it probably wasnt an accurate test.

there isn't much stuff on the back, about 30mm deep dacron i got in a 1Mx1M sheet off ebay. doesnt cost much to try it out.
This cab seems to be built a bit nicer than my other cab. weird! both identical marshall cabs. in theory.

Also, i think taking the center support out between back and baffle effects the bass response a little

Taking out the centre post between the baffle and back should make the bass end less punchy imo.  With the centre post removed, the back will flex like a diaphragm.  With the centre post installed, the back should move very little and the cab should be a little punchier.

Its not night and day though and I used to gig a 4x12 with no centre post that sounded fantastic - in fact, it was the best 4x12 I'd ever owned.  When I swapped it with my mate for his 4x12 + cash my way, I noticed the difference immediately - my old cab was MUCH better.  I think it was mainly because my cab was an old and WELL used JCM800 cab while his was a new vintage RI cab.  My old cab had a solid ply back panel too (I replaced it), while the RI cab had (still has) a particle board back panel.  I'll have to get a solid ply back panel for it at some point - gives the cab more focus in the bass end (crisper).

interestingly, Orange cabs have a centre support that isnt attached to the back, it just rests on the back.
Maybe that is different again if you have the fibre on the back and without the fibre, and with the back panel flexing, reflections are going to differ a lot than if you did have the fibre in there.

Im sure the back on the black cab may have been ply. i remember thinking about that because the other back panel on the orange cab was is particle board, and the hole for the inputs i the back wasn't enlarge well (leveled) for the steel input plate. I wondered if zilla music had give me another back panel, but i doubt it.

maybe its just a strength thing.
I imagine with it screwed in you're carrying vibrations from the baffle to the back. with it in but not screwed down, id imagine the back flexes a little like described earlier, i don't know if you'd get noise from the batton vibrating against the back, but it would still add strength to the baffle. spread the load of the speakers being supported by it.
